- Revision list (ревизская сказка)
- Imperial Russian household enumeration used for taxation and population accounting; genealogically valuable but not a modern census.
- Metrical book
- A register of births, marriages, divorces, and deaths kept by a recognized religious community or its officials.
- Fond
- An archival collection created by one institution, office, family, or record-producing body.
- Opis
- An inventory or series within a fond; it groups and describes files.
- Delo / file
- The individual archival file or unit within an opis.
- Uyezd
- A district-level administrative unit of the Russian Empire. Khotyn was both a town and the seat of Khotin uyezd.
- Guberniya
- An Imperial Russian province or governorate. Khotyn belonged to Bessarabia guberniya after 1812.
- Landsmanshaft
- A hometown or regional mutual-aid society formed by immigrants, often preserving membership and cemetery evidence.
- JOWBR
- JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry, a searchable database of cemetery records and, for many places, gravestone photographs.
- Kehillah
- The organized Jewish community; depending on era, it could have recognized authority over religious, welfare, fiscal, or civil matters.
- Kloyz
- A smaller synagogue or study/prayer house, often associated with a neighborhood, group, or Hasidic circle.

- A Jewish gravestone; inscriptions may preserve Hebrew names, patronymics, titles, kin relationships, and dates.
