7/25/2012  The Chechelnik KehilaLinks on the press

Hi everybody,

Following the article published on the Chechelnik Herald Gazette, the Chechelnik KehilaLinks is now the object of a new article by Alexander Vishnevetsky published on "News of the Week" - one of the two major Israeli newspapers in Russian language - as well as on the on the website of the "Association of Concentration Camps and Ghetto Survivors in Israel".

The article talks about the Chechelnik and Pokotilov KehilaLinks and invites the Israeli Russians to visit JewishGen's website and to share their material, documents and memories with the different KehilaLinks.

You'll find a translated version of the article on the "Chechelnik Today" section

6/20/2012  Big news on the Chechelnik KehilaLinks

Hi everybody,

I've got big news.

a)After a lot of work new section "Books Database" has been added under the Research menu (at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/chechelnik/RES_Books_Home.asp).

The 1895 Podolia Address Calendar is now there, browsable and searchable and new books will be added in the future.
The scanned images have been treated with the following automatic process:
1) digitized with an OCR,
2) converted to the reformed Russian orthography,
3) translated to English by Google.
Therefore it is expected to have many errors. The OCR errors will depend on the quality and the complexity of the original images.

Despite the errors, this treatment allows you to perform searches both in Cyrillic and Roman. You can also browse the books page by page as before.
The digitized texts (corrected Russian and Translated to English) can be found below each page image of the book. As the texts are not formatted, a page with columns or sections will be hard to read but I think that can be still useful and after a search the searched text will be highlighted.

b) Several new articles have been added, mainly automatic translations of Russian articles found on the web:
1) A review of the Chechelnik and Jews history can be found under the "Chechelnik Facts" section at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/chechelnik/HIS_History.asp
2) "Ushichanka Ida Goldschmidt. The pogrom in Ukraine" by Anatoly Shtarkman is a vivid narration of the German invasion during WWII. It's located on the "People Stories" page under the "People" section at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/chechelnik/PEO_Goldschmidt.asp
3) "Famous jews from Chechelnik" is also under the "People" section at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/chechelnik/PEO_Famous.asp

c) There's also a new image of the Old Train Station on the Image Gallery and the Links have been re-categorized and their language informed. For the non English links, an option to open the translated page by Google is available.

Hope you enjoy.

5/24/2012  More great news on Chechelnik KehilaLink

Hi everybody,

The Chechelnik KehilaLink is growing every day.

I've just added to the All Chechelnik Database the list of Chechelnik's residents appearing on the Ellis Island passenger lists.

I've also added a new article about our website that has just been published on the Chechelnik Herald Gazette.
In doing so, I've restructured the "Life in Chechelnik" section so it's easier to navigate: articles are now catalogued in 4 subsections by period (Before WWII, Holocaust, After WWII, Today). The new article is under the subsection "Chechelnik Today".

There's more to come.

I remind you that the website address is http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/chechelnik
