Újfehértó Cemeteries

Jewish families that lived in Újfehértó and probably the surrounding communities used the Újfehértó Cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones. The Orthodox cemetery is located on Kossuth Lajos utca (also called Dorogi utca), the street going from the center of Újfehértó to Hajdudorog. The Regi (old) cemetery is located on Tokaji utca, about two streets north of Kossuth utca.

Translation: This is the old Ratzfert (Újfehértó) Citizens Cemetery. The very few survivors who returned after the big European Jewish disaster in 1944 found this cemetery desecrated and destroyed. They worked and cleaned the area and erected a fence in honor of their ancestors' graves. All this was sponsored by the honorable Tzvi KETENBAUM, may he live a long and good life, from America, who was born in Ratzfert. The memorial was installed in 1980.

There is an interesting story about this stone. It was erected in 1947 or 1948 after my parents fled Hungary. Before their escape, they paid someone to put the stone in place. As they had fled Hungary, they were never allowed to return and visit until the 1980's. My father passed away, in 1984, and my mother visited Újfehértó, in 1986, for the first time. She looked for the stone, but the cemetery was too overgrown with vegetation to find it.

A few years later, around 1990, she visited again with her sisters, Eva and Joly. By then, the cemetery had been cleaned and fenced and she finally found the stone. It was a very moving moment for the three sisters, since all this time - 52 years - my mother was tormented by the uncertainty of it's existence. There are a few spelling mistakes on the stone and it bears the wrong family name (GOLDSTEIN instead of SCHWARTZ) because there was no one to proofread it after my parents fled Hungary.
