Jewishgen, Odessa Town Leader | 11/6/2011 Full All Odessa 1902-1903 online Hi everybody,
Few days ago I've told you about the publishing of the Odessa Real Estate directory index with its transliteration.
However, the Full directory was not available due to its file size (it was a PDF).
I've got a very positive feedback and plenty of page requests from some of you, which motivated me to find a better solution for the full directory.
After some research, I've found a way to convert the pdf to images in an easy way and the full directory is now accessible on the site.
There's a thematic index and you can navigate page by page.
Now I've found that easy way, other directories will follow soon (1899, 1901 and 1914).
Yesterday, Miriam Weiner reminded me about the searchable database of Odessa Business Owners she has compiled. I've added also a direct link to that database on the resources page. She has other resources for Ukraine you can try on her site.
Be aware that there are some changes going on the server and sometimes you've got an error message when accessing some pages of the site. In those cases, try to reload the page or retry a little later.
Regards,
Ariel PARKANSKY
Jewishgen, Odessa Town Leader | 11/2/2011 The transliteration of the Odessa Real Estate Directory of 1902-1903 is online Hello everybody,
I've got some news about the Odessa Kehilalink site.
I've just added the Alphabetical index to the Odessa Real Estate Directory of 1902-1903. You'll find it inside the resources page on the research section.
There are about 7000 names of families owning real estate in the Odessa Municipal District.
Each entry gives the page/s where full information can be found (the full directory it is not included because of its size but I can send a specific page on request) but also indicates the part of the district where the real estate is located (see the notes on the first page of the index).
The index have been treated with optical reading and automatic transliteration so there are errors on the base but most family names are correct.
You'll find for each page side by side the original image, the transliteration and the optical conversion so you'll be able to check on any possible error against the original. I've also added a transliteration tool in the tools section.
There's also a new article on the antisemitism and pogroms in Odessa that I've compiled from different sources in order to give a global view of the violence against Jews from the Russian Empire to WWII.
Any feedback will be welcomed.
Regards,

Jewishgen, Odessa Town Leader | 10/7/2011 Rebirth of Odessa Kehilalink Site (old Shtetlink) Hello everybody,
I'm glad to announce that the Odessa Kehilalink website has reopened its eyes after some years in artificial comma.
Created by Nancy Holden in 2002 it had not been updated since 2005.
I've performed a complete remake on graphics and structure. All the contents of the former site has been reused to fit in the different new sections of the site. Some new contents has been added.
There's still a lot of work to do and I expect that each one of you who have ancestors coming from Odessa will collaborate.
Indeed, there are sections dedicated to :
- images and pictures
- articles about the different sides of Odessa's life
- articles about stories from individuals or familiesYou can propose your images and/or articles to be published on the site. This will help to make it grow.
All your comments to improve the site will also be welcomed
The site's address is http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/odessa/index.asp
Concerning the Odessa database, Kehilalinks doesn't support databases so it will stay on the current website until the data is integrated to the all Ukraine database. Yet, there's a direct link from the Kehilalink page to the database on the "resources" section of the "research" menu.
We have still plenty of documents to translate and new documents arriving for translation.
Some volunteers are already working on the translation but as they work on their spare time the pace is slow.
If you can translate from handwritten Cyrillic, we need your help. There's no engagement of performance results, you do what you can when you can.
Finally, I'd like to pass an advertisement to the website of Stephanie Comfort (jewishpostcardcollection.com). Stephanie has compiled an enormous collection of "jewish" postcards including a section on European Synagogues (including a lot of Ukrainian ones) that I think you'll appreciate. She was very kind of letting me use some of her postcards on the Kehilalink website.
