Tombstone Translation Project

The Jewish Cemetery in Ostroh is one of the oldest in Ukraine, with burials dating back to the 15th century, including notable figures such as the Maharsha.

Over the centuries, it evolved into an important historical site but was desecrated during the Soviet era, repurposed as a park until Hryhoriy Arshynov* rebuilt it.

Resources

The 1907 book written by Menachem Mendel Biber called "Mazkeret Legdoley Ostroha" in which Biber first describes the history of the city, and then dedicates each chapter to a famous figure who was in the city; at the end of each chapter Biber copied the inscription that appeared on that person's tombstone.
