Adas Emuno was the first Jewish congregation in Hoboken. Founded in 1871 with 55 members , all German emigrants. Services were first held in the Odd Fellows Hall . The building pictured was completed in 1883 and is now an apartment building. Among the original members were Louis Ettinger, President; Solomon Wolff, Vice President; Moritz Lesser, secretary; Louis Hart, treasurer. Reno Berel, Max Kounert, and Charles Cohen were trustees.
The first rabbi was the German emigrant Solomon Schindler who moved on to a Boston congregation becoming a well-know reform rabbi. Only one of the many references to the rabbi which can be found on the net is linked here.
Not even a picture remains of Moses Montefiore Synagogue founded in 1895 by Orthodox eastern European Jews among whom were my great great great grandmother Amelia Brand. Pictured here is the Odd Fellows Hall which hosted Adas Emuno before they moved to their own building. At its founding Moses Montefiore had 60 member families. A religious school, a sister and brotherhood, and various Jewish charities were formed almost immediately. The synagoge was at 76 Grand Street. The school building was beside it. Rabbi Ch. Hershensohn was the first rabbi.
Star of Israel is on the roster of historic places and is the oldest temple in New Jersey still being used for religious services. A history of the congregation was included in a booklet prepared for the re dedication of the temple which includes its present mission. Originally founded after a split in the Moses Montefiore Congregation, Star of Israel was formed as an orthodox institution. It is presently a Conservative Temple. I have no be able to locate the name of its first rabbi as yet. Other pictures of the restored temple follow
