Notes and Sources

1 a. Identified by Rabbi LIPA MANN (e-mail from grandson 7 January 2005: "Name Elozor MEISELES. His son is Image 30." [originally identified only as "MEISELS?" in the gallery images I received.]

1 b. Confirmed by Shulem KATZ 24 April 2006 "Elozor MEISELS (son of Simu HABLERSTAM); he is father of Image 30."

4 a. Misidentified as Simu HALBERSTAM. "This is not Simu HALBERSTAM (I have Simu HABLERSTAM as a woman - your Image 62. I don't know which of the two is Simu"; Louis SCHONFELD 25 June 2000. [Simu HALBERSTAM (misidentification). There was a Zisu HALBERSTAM who was the son of a famous rabbi named HALBERSTAM. Alexander doesn't recognize the photo, but notes the name in the photo is wearing the hat of a Hasidic rabbi. You are correct, Simu is a girl's name; Alexander UNGAR, June 2000]

4 b. Identified by Rabbi LIPA MANN (e-mail from grandson 7 January 2005: "Rabbi Meshilem Zisha Yitzchok HALBERSHTAM the son of Grand Rabbi Shulem Lazar z"l from Ratzfert."

4 c. According to Shulem Katz 24 April 2006 (on behalf of Simu HABLERSTAM) this is not Rabbi Meshilem Zisha Yitzchok HALBERSHTAM. It is misidentified by source 4b.

8. RABINOVITCH, fish merchant; identification Shulem KATZ 24 April 2006 on behalf of Simu HABLERSTAM.

9. Identified in Újfehértó Zsidosga (Jozsef BUCZKO, Újfehértó 1998) as EISENBERGER foeraszmaster. Alexander UNGAR confirms there was a barber named EISENBERGER, but does not think this is a photo of him. 25 June 2000.

11. Isaac UNGAR was a teacher and son of a grain merchant. (Source: Alexander UNGAR. Note: Isaac was a second cousin of Alexander's father).

15 a. "Mr. Mayer DUM and Mrs. Necha/Olga (KORN) DUM." Identified by Zisi DUM, 14 December 2002.

15 b. Same as Image 38. "Meyer DUM was my brother. He died in 1988 at the age of 65... [He was] the son of Rabbi Hersh Meilich DUM. He was the Gabi [private secretary] of the Grand Rabbi Shulem Laezer HALBERSTAM." Identified by Zisi DUM, 19 December 2002.

18. According to Shulem KATZ, 24 April 2006, on behalf of Simu HALBERSTAM, this is not Isaac Isur FRANKEL, as originally identified when I first received the gallery images. It is FISCHMAN. Same person as Image 101, without glasses.

22. He was a tinsmith. Same person as Image 28, without a hat.
