Nove Davydkovo Holocaust

During the Czech era, almost all of the Jews accepted Czech citizenship and there was Jewish representation in the government in Prague. In the spring of 1939, when the Hungarians reoccupied the region, Jews were forced to apply for Hungarian citizenship by submitting documentation proving their ancestors had lived and paid taxes in Hungary since 1851. Some were able to do so while others were not. In 1941, most of the young men in Nove Davydkovo and the region were drafted into the Munkatabor (Forced Labor Battalions). They were sent to the front lines against the Soviets. In April 1944, the remaining Jewish households had their valuables and belongings catalogued and confiscated. They were then rounded up in the ghetto in Mukachevo from where they were ultimately transported by train to Auschwitz for extermination.

NOTE: Nove Davydkovo was located in the Gendarmerie District VIII (Kassa). Ghettoization of the countryside Jews to the larger towns occurred 16-28 April 1944; deportations to the Auschwitz concentration camp occurred between 15 May and 7 June 1944.

The 1944 Kassa list of Death Trains details the number of Jews deported and the stations of departure. (Kassa is present-day Košice, Slovakia.)

The names below comprise Jewish heads of households whose
