Chabad in Cherkassy

by

Esther Rechtschafner

Chabad has representatives in Cherkassy. They are Rabbi Dov Axelrod and his wife Chana. They and their family have lived in Cherkassy for ten years now.

The Jewish Communities in the area that are under their jurisdiction are:

Uman, Shpola, Smela, Kaniv, Zaltinusha,Talne, Zolotonosha, Zizkov, Lisikinka, Chernobyl, Kherson, Rachmastrivka, Chyhyryn, and Zvenyhorodka.

Today there are about 8,000 Jews in Cherkassy. About 2,000 are known to be Jewish; the others are hiding their Jewish Identity. Just about every week, however, another person or family admits to their Jewish background.

There are a variety of activities available to the wider Cherkassy Community. About three-hundred Jews come to the Synagogue. Our activities are for Jews; but we do not check people who attend for Jewish identification.

Only those who are definitely Jewish are accepted in Chabad Educational Institutions and for Torah Study.

Chabad in Cherkassy does not deal with conversions. Those who want to convert to Judaism are sent to Rabbi Brudveker in Kiev.

Chabad works together with the "Chesed" program run by Metrowest.
