Merry Ruvinovna Khvoles (Shkolnik)
(1933 – 1990, Tbilisi)
Mary Shkolnik (nee - Khvoles), was
distinguished by her beauty and a wonderful character. She graduated from
the Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute. She taught English at a school #55
(“Tbilisi Special School of English”). She was an excellent teacher. She co-authored
an experimental English textbook. Her methodological
developments in teaching English were considered the most interesting and
were recommended for use in Tbilisi schools.
Teachers had to work in difficult conditions,
there were not enough classes. Often the lessons had to be held on the
school stairs (!). Merry worked a lot with children. There was not enough
time allotted for language teaching. She conducted afterschool classes with
students at home. She worked as a teacher and the educator, instilled love
for a foreign language. She staged performances in English with her
students (excerpts from Jane Eyre and Pinocchio, etc.).
She was ready to help everyone. She worked
selflessly, without additional pay.
She tragically passed away at the age of 57
from peritonitis.
