Narewka
Gravestone of Yehuda Aydel Birenbaum
A number of descendants of families from
Narewka have traveled there over the years to see the hometown of their
ancestors; a few survivors have made return
visits. Ten years ago Israel Birenbaum visited
Narewka with his father Moshe, who was born there in
1918 and left in June of 1941 to join the Red Army,
leaving behind his family, who would soon be murdered
with the rest of the Jewish community. About two months
after his father's passing, Israel, who was named after
his father's younger brother, just returned from a
second trip made in May of 2011 with his brother, who
was named after their paternal grandfather Aharon Zvi.
They were accompanied by 45 Israeli students from the
high school his brother runs; while in Narewka they had
the opportunity to meet with local Polish students from
the Zespół Szkół w
Narewce. You can read Israel's moving account
of his two trips to Narewka here, Visits in Narewka -
Birenbaum Family.
On this recent trip to Narewka Israel was
able to locate his great-grandfather's grave, which he
and his father were not able to accomplish when they
were there in 2001. He wrote to me, " I have just
came back from a very exciting visit in Poland -
specifically in Narewka. I, along with my brother and
his school (45 students) had a great meeting with the
students of a Narewka local school. We also did a joint
tour in my father's home town from the Synagogue [site]
to the cemetery. There I located in miracle way the
grave of my father's grandfather - somehow I
walked straight to his grave, although in my last visit
with my father in 2001 we didn't find it! Then we went
to the monument and made a ceremony - I played my father
saying Kaddish back at 2001 and asked the students to
say Amen now - it was very exciting." (May 2011)
