Survivors Memorialize Loved Ones

The areas around Mlynov and Mervits were liberated by the Russian Army in early 1944. Survivors of the Nazi horror came out of hiding and found one another. Many headed East to Rovno to get further behind the front lines. After it became safe to return to small towns, some of the survivors headed back to Mlynov and Mervits in the spring of 1944 to see what had become of their loved ones, their homes, and their belongings.

That fall they organized a commemoration and memorial to all those lost during the prior two years. The ceremony took place in the ravine where the ghetto liquidation took place. Pits had been dug here by Ukrainians at the location where animals previously were slaughtered for food. The video above summarizes what is known about that commemoration and who was there.
