Cemeteries and Burial Information

Kosice has two cemeteries, one considered the "old" cemetery and the larger newer cemetery that also has large Holocaust memorials that I photographed as shown on the Holocaust page.

Some burial information for the huge Kosice cemetery can be found in Jewish Gen's JOWBR, but other links may have some supplemental information and/or images.

The newer cemetery is divided into several sections, separating the Neological (similar to Reform) practitioners from the Orthodox. Peter Absolon, an IT professional, whose hobby is to photograph such tombstones, has an on-going project to photograph and document what he can find and posts his work in www.findagrave.com. You can check out what has been contributed for the large Kosice cemetery, the Židovský cintorín.

5 June 2015

As of this date there are 3,545 links, however, not all entries have photographs of the tombstones.

Peter also undertook to document the burials and provide photographs for Kosice's old Jewish cemetery (Stary zidovsky cintorin).

All of these efforts can only be considered a chesed, an act of loving-kindness, and we are all grateful for his efforts.

Thanks to the records maintained at Kosice's Jewish Community Center, he had a good starting point. However, somehow not everything is as easy to locate as might be expected!

Peter Absolon has been extremely active in providing transcriptions of records for former residents of Kosice, some who were born there and some who lived and eventually died there.  He continued his efforts to photograph parts of the Kosice Cemetery as mentioned below and at the very end of 2015, provided the Kosice Kehila with a folder containing spreadsheets of people who were buried in the Neolog Section of the cemetery.  The data comprise family name, given name, and date of death. A sample can be seen below.

The Kosice Kehila will use these to assist those looking for their families and relatives; determining how to fix broken stones and where necessary, which stones may require replacement.

Many of the tombstones also include inscriptions of "In Memoriam" as cenotaphs for those killed during the Holocaust, for whom there is no known burial place.

As of the end of December 2015, there are 4,588 records in findagrave for Kosice, and 2,585 listed as having a grave. But as a caveat, not all of the stones can be read. Some have crumbled or eroded. But thanks to Peter's research at least we know who is buried under the unreadable or missing stones. So that is great information.

These records will also eventually be incorporated into JewishGen's Jewish On-line Worldwide Burial Registry.

Once again great kudos to Peter for his work.  I assisted by adding Hebrew names as best as she could.  In the case of detailed tombstones or for some very notable rabbis or others, more information was also translated.

If anyone is related to people buried in this cemetery and would like to add a bio or photo please contact either Peter or me.

About Birth Records

A sample page of birth records from a rabbi's registry is shown below.  Some records like these can be found on the FamilySearch pages supported by the LDS. For this sample, click on it to see an enlarged image.  Attempts to include a direct link to the images of the Kosice birth records for Abov, Gemer, Zemplin, Kosice (1851-1870) result in errors from the KehilaLinks server, so the direct link has been removed.  You might try pasting this string into the address line: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RFB-Q2Z6?cc=1554443 .

Members in Jewish Organizations in Košice During the Interwar Period

11 May 2016

Peter Absolon, while trying to clarify the spelling of a family name for a findagrave.com entry in Kosice, discovered a paper by researcher Veronika Gayer, written in Hungarian, in 2011. The abstract in English of her paper reads:

Jewish Organisations in Košice During the Interwar Period
(For those able to read Hungarian, click on this title above, to see the full PDF of her article.)

The purpose of this research was to investigate and present Jewish organisations that existed in interwar Košice, /Kassa, Kaschau/ Czechoslovakia, present-day Slovakia. During my research I used the following archival sources of the State Archives of Košice and the Košice City Archives: documents of the Police Headquarters 1920-1938, the so-called Košice Župa 1923-27, the City Council 1923-38; 1939-44 and fonds of Jewish organisations. On the bases of these materials I was able to identify 28 different political, religious, charity, social, sports and other types of organisations. I tried to present not only their aims and activities but also to publish their membership lists and the name of the archival fond where their statutes are located, whenever I found these information among the sources.

Peter Absolon extracted, compiled, and alphabetized the data displayed in the table below, producing this wonderful and unexpected resource. The table shows the person's names, profession, place of residence, birth (place and date), and even the parents' names. The last column indicates the society to which that person belonged, written in the local language. Becuase this was based on membership in a society or organization, if a person belonged to more than one, that will appear as a separate line in the table.

Thanks also to Tom Venetianer who provided JewishGen with a list of Hungarian Occupations, that allowed Peter to also insert the English version of the profession.

Unidentified School Photos from Jewish Neolog Elementary School, ca. 1930s

The following photos are thumbnails and if you click on one, it will display a much larger image.

2 April 2018, from Peter Absolon

Peter Absolon received this set of photos from a friend who wanted to share them with the world. They are photos groups of school children from Jewish Neolog Elementary School, presumed to have been taken in the 1930s. The school was close to the Neolog synagogue that was later converted into the State Philharmonic Arts Center that can be seen as it is today on the Town Views page.

We welcome anyone who can identify the children or teachers and maybe to suggest the years these may have been taken. It is impossible to know how many of these young people actually lived to adulthood and how many survived the Holocaust.

4 April 2018, from Amos Zezmer

Amos noted that some photos had children in the front holding paper signs identifying their classes by years in Roman numerals. Almost all the classes are separated by gender.

4 April 2018

Photos have now been rearranged. The photos are now arranged by the backgrounds and how the children are seated. As Amos noted, most of the classes have either all boys or all girls.  However, the last one with the sign "VI oszt" comprises both boys and girls and I suggest it may be a graduating class, if VI being the 6th year, might be the extent of the elementary school.

One more interesting thing to notice: In the last set where a menorah appears above the heads of the children, the pillars on either side have areas that have large smudges on them. I believe you can discern on the right side what remains of a swastika that had been painted and then the smudge was an attempt to cover it up. Perhaps a newspaper article at the time might shine light as to which year the vandalism took place. It would seem that set were all taken in the same year and photos for each class were taken then.

Backgrounds one and two, boys and girls in separate classes. Background 2 is probably for the year 1929.

Peter passed on the list below of 32 of the 42 classmates, as identified by Edita Salomonova (b. 4 December 1923, as Edit NEUMANN).  Edita herself, is head-to-head on the teacher's left, as we look at the photo, and an enlargement is below. Despite her advanced age, she recalled these names very clearly!

An article about Edita Salomonova published 23 January 2013 appeared in English, "Pain remains for Slovak Holocaust Survivor," because Edita is believed to have been one of four people who survived deportation. The two photos below are from that article, with the first taken just after World War II, and the second at the time of the article (2013) when she was about 90 years old.

Edita Salomonova_PostWWII

Edita Salomonova_PostWWII

Another article about her (5 June 2016) is in Slovak. The long title roughly translated by this webmaster is: "She Survived Three Concentration Camps and with an Arm That Had Been Shot, Wandered for Months [to reach] Home Where no one Expected Her." But even an automated translation of the article should give you a good idea of her harrowing experience.

Photos from a Public? School, attended by many Jewish Children

5 June 2018, Peter Absolon

Peter's friend provided him with two school photos, for a school that was not necessarily Jewish, but in which many Jewish boys attended.  These two photos might even be for the same class of boys, and the same teacher, although for two different years.  The first is for 1926-1927, the second for 1928-1929.  Peter noted that the school name has been changed from Slovak (1926/27) to Hungarian (1928/29).

Searchable Databases

Database Comments
JewishGen Family Finder

Would you like to connect with others researching Kosice? Search this database and plug in "Kosice" in the town field.

JewishGen's All Hungarian Database

Since Kosice was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this is a great place to search.  Just plug in your name of interest in the first text field.  In the second, select the Data Type of "Town" and fill in Kosice, and see what happens!

JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR)

This is an excellent resource although it relies on the information donated by people who have researched specific cemeteries.  Not every tombstone in every cemetery in the world can be found, but you may still be surprised at what can be found.  Note that sometimes names are misspelled and not every record has a corresponding tombstone image.

All Poland Database

It's a one-stop shop!
The Jewish Records Indexing - Poland and JewishGen "All Poland Database" is a multiple database search facility, which incorporates all of the following databases: JRI -Poland, Yizkor Book Necrologies, JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF), JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR), 1891 Galicia Business Directory, 1929 Polish Business Directory, 1890-1891 New York Immigrants from Poland, Austria and Galicia, JG Discussion Group Archives, SIG Mailing List Archives and much much more. What is important to realize is that Jews moved around -- either because they wanted to or were forced to.  So sometimes when you're sure someone came from one place, they could have come from another.

New York Public Library, Kosice Yizkor Book

From the catalog of New York Public Library's collection of Yizkor books, this 474 page book can be accessed. It appears to be in Hebrew and Slovak.
