Beit She'arim is an archaeological site located in the Lower Galilee. This was an important Jewish settlement during the eras of the Second Temple, the Mishna and the Talmud. The height of the settlement blossomed between the second and the fourth centuries of the Common Era when the Sanhedrin was presided over by Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi.
Ancient Beit She'arim is located on Sheikh Abrik Hill near modern Kiryat Tivon. The hill is on one of the southern branches of the Lower Galilee from where one can see the Jezreel Valley to the southeast and see Mount Carmel to the west.
The site consists of a necropolis of rock-cut tombs; some remains of the town have also been excavated. The necropolis contains family tombs, tombs built into the hillside, and connecting tombs.
Twenty catacombs, some of which are two stories high, have been excavated; one of the catacombs contains four-hundred stone burial places. There are limestone sarcophagi, as well as stone, marble, and wooden coffins. Stone coffins are engraved with carvings and inscriptions. Jewish folk art and motifs decorate the catacombs in the form of paintings and carvings.
