CHORZELE, POLAND
HISTORY
Changing
Borders and Countries
The town of
Chorzele was established in 1542. In
1551 King Zygmunt I of Poland gave the town
"rights." From 1795 to 1807, the town was ruled by
neighboring Prussia. During the years,
1807-1918, Chorzele was under the authority of
the Duchy of Warsaw, the Kingdom of Poland and
the Russian Empire.(Plock
Gubernia). In 1918, the town was
part of the new, independent country
of Poland. However, in 1939, Germany invaded Poland and began its occupation of Chorzele. After end of WWII, Poland was under the control of the Soviet Union. In the early 1990's, the Soviet Union collapsed and Poland was re-established as an independent country. Chorzele

were a small number (19) of Jews that lived in
Chorzele. In 1897, the Jewish population
had increased to 1,549 people.
In 1905, the
number of Jews grew to 2,301, which
represented 57% of the town's total
population.
(www. sztetl.org; www.jewshgen.org) The Jewish
community built a large synagogue and
established cheder schools
and a yeshiva. Also, the community
acquired land for a cemetery.
Jews in the town
were craftsman,
shopkeepers, farmers,
laborers, and owners of small manufacturing
plants. Because of Chorzele's border
location, some Jews were involved in the exporting and importing of goods. In the 1900's, a Zion Association , a cooperative bank and Jewish library were established. Between WWI and WWII, 150 Jews from Chorzele emigrated to Palestine. During the German occupation (1939-1945) the remaining Jews, were sent to Jewish ghettos and then to concentration camps.
