On 1 August 1941, Hungarian authorities deported about half the town's Jews to Poland as part of a mass deportation of Carpathian Jews who could not prove Hungarian citizship. Given 30 minutes to gather what they could carry, they walked to the neighboring town of Bustina and were loaded into cattle cars and taken to Korosmeso, and eventually taken by trucks into eastern Poland, robbed by their Hungarian captors, and abandoned. Most of the 25,000 Carpathian Jews deported in this way were taken to Kamenets-Podolsk and immediately murdered there by German einzatsgrubben (Nazi mobile killing units). The Jews from Vonihovo avoided this fate. |

The Jews from Vonihovo perished over the next two years in Belzec, or through forced labor, or by shootings in various ghettos. Of the 150
or so deportees from Vonihovo, Helen GROSSMAN (mother of Stanley M. DUB) was the only known survivor. |

The day after Passover 5704 (16 April 1944), the general roundup of all Vonihovo's Jews began. They were all taken to the ghetto, where they cowered for a month or so and then were transported to Auschwitz. |
