Vonihovo Family Photos

To be inclusive, we contacted all of the Vonihovo researchers with an e-mail address listed in JewishGen (as of 17 October 2012).
We asked each person contacted for family photographs or anything else to make the Vonihovo shtetl web pages in JewishGen's
KehilaLinks more interesting for all current and future researchers. Our sincere appreciation is expressed to all who responded.

Below, you will find photos of families that once lived in Vonihovo. In most cases, the photos you see survived the Holocaust only
because they were mailed to relatives in the United States and elsewhere.

photo
Photo taken on their wedding day. It is remembered Eliezer was given a dowry of gold coins in a sack and he put them under his hat, but somehow lost them at the wedding celebration. They had three young daughters shipped to Auschwitz in May, 1944. Upon arrival at the "selection point" at Auschwitz, Eliezer volunteered to take another person's young child because he wanted to stay with his family. The other mother survived, but Eliezer was gassed with his family.

The photo was taken just weeks before the family was deported to Poland by the Hungarians. Ruth was gassed upon arrival at Belzec in September, 1942. Ethel died shortly before liberation, Spring 1944. She was living that winter in an underground bunker with Helen and 25 others, in the woods outside Borszczow Ghetto, Poland. After heavy spring rains, the bunker collapsed, killing many. Helen survived, Ethel died. They were liberated by Russians a few weeks later.
