Tomb of Rabbi Nachman

Nachman of Breslov

Nachman of Breslov played a major role in
Hasidic history. He was the founder of the
Breslov Hasidic movement that merged the
study of Kabbalah and Torah.

Rebbe Nachman, born in 1772, was a great-
grandson of the Baal Shem Tov – founder
of Hasidim. In 1802 the Rebbe moved to
Breslov where he established the Breslover
Hasidim. It was in Breslov that Rebbe
Nachman wrote his great work, Likutey

In May 1810 a fire destroyed Rebbe Nachman's
home; as a consequence, he was invited to live
in Uman. Earlier, in 1807, the Rebbe developed
tuberculosis; he only lived in Uman for a few
months, passing away at age thirty-eight on
the fourth day of Sukkot 1810.

Rebbe Nachman is buried in the Uman
cemetery where more than 20,000 Jews,
murdered in the 1768 Haidamak Massacre,
are buried.

Every Rosh Hashana Hasidim travel to the
Rebbe's Uman gravesite.
