"He was born in Svisloch, Poland, in 1909. In his childhood he experienced the horrors of rampant anti-Semitism. By the time Lewis was nine years old Svisloch has been overrun five times by Russian armies, then by Germans, followed by the Bolsheviks. The latter jailed his father for a short time because he was a leading democratic socialist, a Menshevik. In 1921 the Lewis's migrated to Canada and settled in Montreal. "
