---|---|
Stare Davydkovo was under the
jurisdiction of the Mukachevo Rabbinate and did not
have a permanent local rabbi. As Jews throughout the
region were generally traditional, they followed
Orthodox Jewish law. There was one prominent rabbi
whose is known to have spent time living in the
viscinity of Nove Davydkovo and Stare Davydkovo.
Rabbi Reuven Chaim KLEIN was born in 1826 in Krakow,
Poland and moved to Mukachevo as a child. He
eventually learned under the Chatam Sofer and
Maharam Ash. He later married the daughter of a
certain Hersh Ber from the nearby village Horonda.
In 1871, he published an essay called Shenot
Chaim, which was a commentary on the Rabbeinu
Yerucham, a prominent rabbi in 14th century France.
He died in Vienna, Austria at a young age in 1873
where he is buried. There was a small synagogue in
Stare Davydkovo that was constructed at the
beginning of the 20th century by Hirsch Leib
SALAMON. It consisted of two rooms and was adjacent
to his home. |

There were not enough local Jews for a
regular minyan, so people crossed the bridge to Nove
Davydkovo to have a minyan. The closest mikveh to
the village was in Nove Davydkovo. There was no
shochet in the village, so each family would
slaughter their own chicken according to the laws of
kashrut before the Sabbath. Beef was very expensive
and was only available from butchers in Mukachevo. |

Education ~ |
|
The
Jewish children attended the one Ruthenian
elementary school which taught children from the
first through the eighth grade. Jewish education was
taught at home, and families often hired private
teachers to come to their homes. These teachers were
oftentimes yeshiva students from Mukachevo. For more
formal Jewish education parents sent their children
to cheders or yeshivas in nearby Mukachevo, or the
other nearby cities like Uzhhorod or Berehovo. There
were no Czech or Hungarian schools in the village. |
