Folks spoke Yiddish. Many did not read or write English and spelled their name mirroring the phonetic transliteration of the European (Russian or Polish) name. Surnames were NOT changed on Ellis Island or in any other port.
The great emigration from Shchedrin began in the 1890's. One of the first to leave Shchedrin was 15-year-old Harry Friedman, who went to Pittsburgh, PA.
A few sets of variant family surnames, together with a reference of some of their members, follows. A table of surname variants is shown below.
AINBUND, AJNBUND, AYNBUND, EINBUND, and EINBUNDT might all be relatives. This family was from Parichi and a daughter married one of the nine children Berl WEINER.
HORELICK could be spelled HORLICK, HORLIK and because there is no "G" in Russian, people might call themselves GORELICK, or GORELIK and then change the name in the United States to GARRICK, GARELICK, GORDON.
Minna AMITIN immigrated with her son Shmeril AMITIN to Baltimore via Ellis Island to join her son Leonis KAGANOVITCH. They arrived on Ellis Island on 08 June 1922 from Liverpool, Merseyside, England on the S.S. "Scythia". They left 31-year-old "Motl GANKIN" in "Shtchedrin". He would die in the Shoah. They are going to her son, Leonis Kaganovitch on Ostend Avenue (Hamilton Station), Baltimore, MD. She was listed as a widow. We don't know why her older son took her surname. Her headstone in inscribed Minnie Amitin (Kahanovitz).
The DENBURG clan migrated to Montreal, New York, and one to London, England. In Montreal in the early 1900s the school system had many Catholic nuns as teachers and administrators. One youngster was renamed DEMBURG and the nuns refused to correct this spelling. Another branch of the family emigrated from Montreal to New York and misspelled their name DENBERG. DEMBURG occurred again on Holocaust lists in Yad Vashem.
