Goods and
Chattel
Our forebears left home to travel half way across the world, often
starting off on foot. What they took with them must say something about what they held dear to
them.
'Tata' (father) would probably not give much thought about packing in his Tallit and Tefillin -
it would go into the bag before any clothes. Likewise, 'muter' (mother) would reach for the shabbat candle sticks, especially the ones that came
from 'bobe' (grandmother).
But what about the samovar or the pillows filled with home plucked feathers? Do we take the
Machzor printed in Russian or Yiddish?
Featured here are some of the goods that were taken on the long journey to the new country.
Things that had great value to them way back then.
