Munkács Other Rabbis

~ WEISZ Rabbinical History ~

The first member of WEISZ rabbinical family is Rabbi Avruhom WEISZ, he was born to his father Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ on 7 Elul 5553 (15 August 1793) in the town of Vásárosnamény, Hungary. While Rabbi Avruhom was a young child, his father passed away and the Chief Rabbi of Kalev, Rabbi Aizik TAUB took him into his home—raising him as one of his own—and going so far to leave him 400 silver coins in his will to say kaddish (memorial prayers) the first year and to keep the Kaliver Rabbi's yartzeit like a son.

In his later years, he emigrated to Israel where he became a member of the Beth-Din (Religious Court) of Teveria and he passed away on 7 Elul 5620 (25 August 1860) and is buried in Teveria (Tiberias), Israel. Rabbi Avruhom WEISZ left 3 sons, of which 2 sons, the oldest, Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ and Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik WEISZ, both eventually became Rosh Beth-Din (Chief Judge) of Munkács. The third son, Rabbi Mordechai WEISZ, accompanied him to Israel and is buried next to him.

As mentioned, the oldest son of Rabbi Avruhom, Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ, was Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács and he was born in Munkács and was a beloved student of the Chief Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech SPIRA. In 5594 (1834), he married Tzirel, the daughter of Rabbi Tzvi Hersch OESZTREICHER from Drohobitch (today Drohobych, Ukraine) and a dayan (judge) of Munkács. Rabbi Tzvi Hersch passed away in Munkács on 16 Teves 5602 (29 December 1841). Chief Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech SPIRA was the mesader kedishin (one who officiates a wedding ceremony). Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi became a close disciple of the Zdichoiver rabbis and they in return loved and respected him dearly. He passed away on 21 Nisan 5639 (14 April 1879).

Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ was survived by four sons: Chief Rabbi Yosef Meyer WIESZ of Spinka (today Sapînta, Romania), Rabbi Aron WEISZ Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács, Rabbi Moshe WEISZ a rabbi in Munkács and Rabbi BenTzion WEISZ.

The second son of Rabbi Avruhom WEISZ, Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik WEISZ, was born in Munkács on 22 Adar 5584 (21 February 1824). He married the daughter of Kalman in Pasica, nearby Munkács, where he lived for 17 years. In 5619 (1859), he was appointed Rabbi of Savaliva (today, Svalyava, Ukraine) for 20 years and then, in 5639 (1879), he came to Munkács and was appointed the Rosh Beth-Din, a position he held for 15 years. He passed away on 22 Adar II 5654 (30 March 1894). Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik authored the Beis Yitzchok (House of Yitzchok).

Rabbi Aron WEISZ was born on 1 Shevat 5611 (4 January 1851) to Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ, the Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács. He studied under his brother, the rabbi of Spinka and his uncle, Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik WEISZ, Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács. When he was 17, he married Fayga, the daughter of one of the oldest rabbis in Hungary, Rabbi Yehosua Heshel HaKohen FRIED who was approximately 100 years old when he passed away. As a young man, he a was appointed Rabbi of Bendikovitz (today Benedykivtsi, Ukraine), not far from Munkács. In 5667 (1907), Chief Rabbi Tzvi Hersch SPIRA called on him to serve in the office of his ancestors as dayan and in 5675 (1915), he was appointed as Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács. While he was Rosh Beth-Din of Munkács, his residence was in the village of Rosvigev (today Rosvigovo, Ukraine), nearby Munkács where he was also the rabbi. ~ Rabbi David SHLISSEL (SCHLUSSEL) ~

Rabbi David SHLISSEL was born in 5624 (1864) in Sanz, Galicia and his bris (circumcision) was on the first day of Shavous. The Rabbi of Sanz, Rabbi Chaim HALBERSTAM was mohel (one who performs circimcisions) and sandek (one who holds the boy) and when it came to pronouncing the child's name, the Sanzer Rabbi named him Duvid, after Duvid Hamelech (King David), whose yartzeit (memorial observance) falls on the first day of Shavous. in his youth, Rabbi David SHLISSEL was known as the Sanzer Iluy (genius). Later in life, after he married, he lived in Zabarev—his wife's hometown—where he became Dayan (Judge). When Rabbi SHLISSEL arrived in Munkács, he opened a yeshiva (religious school) where his two sons, Rabbi Chaim Yecheskel SHLISSEL(who at the young age of 30, became the Rosh Hakuhel (Community Head) of Munkács) and Rabbi Nuta Sholomo SHLISSEL (who was also a dayan in Munkács) helped him run the yeshiva. ~ Rabbi Avruhom HERSHKOWITZ ~

Rabbi Avruhom HERSHKOWITZ, who was known as Rabbi Avruhom Dayan, was born in Munkács in approximately 5572 (1812) to Rabbi Duvid and Toba Freida. Rabbi Duvid HERSHKOWITZ was a 10th Generation descendant of the famed great rabbi known as the Tira Zahav. Rabbi Avruhom HERSHKOWITZ was a beloved student of Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech SPIRA, who was then the Chief Rabbi of Munkács. Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech SPIRA paired Rabbi Avruom HERSHKOWITZ as a study partner with his son, Rabbi Duvid SPIRA, who succeeded his father as the Chief Rabbi of Dinov. Rabbi Avruhom became the rabbi of the Beis Hamedrash Chevra Tenach synagogue.

When Rabbi Shlomo SPIRA became Chief Rabbi of Munkács, he appointed Rabbi Avruhom as a dayan and a member of the rabbinical court. There is an interesting responsa from that era, when Basya, the daughter of Rabbi Avruhom Dayan, married Rabbi Moshe WEISZ, the son of the Rosh Beth-Din, Rabbi Shmiel Tzvi WEISZ. Another dayan of the Munkács rabbinical court asked if they are allowed to arrange a chalitza together. Normally, according to the Torah, a brother-in-law must marry his brother's widow if the brother died without any children. A chalitza permits her to marry anybody else. In this case, she was granted permission to marry another person. Rabbi Avruhom HERSHKOWITZ passed away on 3 Shevat 5647 (28 January 1887) and he authored Berchas Avruhom.

Rabbi Duvid HaKohen SALTZER was born in Szerdahely (today Dunajská Streda, Slovakia) in 5602 (1842) to Rabbi Michuel HaKohen and Ruchel Leah, the daughter of Rabbi Duvid DEUTSCH, Chief Rabbi of Buda. At a young age, he studied in the yeshiva of his uncle, Rabbi Shimon FRIEDMAN, Chief Rabbi of Galanta, Hungary and then he became one of the top students of his first cousin, Rabbi Menachem ASH, Chief Rabbi of Ungvár (today, Uzhhorod, Ukraine). At the age of 18, he married Chana Perel, the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Shlomo OESZTREICHER, a Dayan in Munkács. She was brought up by her sister Ester and her husband, Rabbi Yosef Zurech HOROWITZ, who had a synagogue known as Rabbi ZURECH's Beis Hamedrash (synagogue). Rabbi Yosef Zurech supported Rabbi Duvid and his family. In 5646 (1886), Rabbi Duvid's SALTZER's wife passed away and a little while later, he married Chana Fradel, the daughter of Rabbi Mordechai OESZTREICHER, (the brother of his first wife) and Ester the daughter of Rabbi Tzvi ZALTZBERGER a Dayan in Munkács. In 5630 (1870), Rabbi Tzvi Hersch SPIRA, Chief Rabbi of Munkács, appointed him as dayan. He authored Divrei Duvid (Words of David) and he passed away on 29 Sh'vat 5660 (26 January 1900).

His son, Rabbi Meyer Zev HaKohen SALTZER, succeeded him as Dayan in Munkács and as Rabbi of Rabbi ZURECH's beis hamedrash.
