Old Munkács Cemetery Tombstones

In the 1960s, the Russians confiscated the Munkács cemetery property intending to construct a factory, but due to the efforts spearheded by
Rabbi Tzvi (Hershel) KESTENBAUM and a few other influential people, they were able to save the cemetery from total destruction; it remains
in its current condition with unmolested graves. Some families were able to re-inter their loved ones in the new Mukacheve cemetery before
clearing the cemetery of its tombstones, which were bulldozed and buried in pits on the cemetery property. Following is what was found at
the Munkács cemetery property in 2011.

Memorial Stone Translation

The first paragraph is based on a prayer from Rabbi (Rabeinu) Gershom on the high holy days;
they inserted the City of Munkács in the prayer. The original prayer has the City of the Almighty.
The remaining text is a loose translation of the memorial.

I shall remember, O Almighty, and I shall moan, when I see every city built on its hilltop in glory while the City of Munkács is downtrodden and in shambles, but despite all this, we are the Almighty's and our eyes look to the Almighty.

Let this Memorial be a witness on the holy congregations of this large city onto the Almighty, a city full of wise men and scribes, synagogues, wise men and their students, elementary students and their teachers, teenagers and young men who studied the holy Torah day and night, holy men who did the Almighty's biding with their heart and body, and the good name of this city became known for all.

Woe is unto me on the loss of the glorious city of Munkács which went up as a total sacrifice to the Almighty during the years of the war, when more then 6 million of the Jewish nation were murdered, of which included most of the Jewish inhabitants of the City of Munkács, may the Almighty revenge their spilled blood, and those that stayed alive, were spread all over the world and the city remained desolate.

And I raise my voice in mourning on those lying here that rested here on their eternal rest in this old cemetery, which holds thousands of Jewish Munkács inhabitants, among them are the holy rabbis that led the holy Kehila of Munkács through the generations and where every resting place was marked with a tombstone attesting to the person lying beneath it; and where their descendants pored out their hearts in beseeching the Almighty in the honor of those lying here and this holy place was soaked with their tears from many generations.

When the gates and the tombstones were broken, we couldn't do anything about it, and there was nothing left except the resting places of those buried here without us knowing who is buried where and for many years the worry of total annihilation was hovering on this holy cemetery.

But with the Almighty's help, and the help of generous hearts of the Jewish nation, we were able to build a new gate that should protect this holy cemetery from total annihilation and protection for those lying here and let this memorial attest that their holy spirits still lives in our hearts and we won't let them be forgotten from our hearts forever.

For this reason, we erected this memorial in this holy place, it should be a remembrance of the holy people lying in this place, and it should be a remembrance for our descendants forever to go in their ways, and that they should beseech the almighty before his holy throne for all our descendants and the whole Jewish nation that we should merit that he should keep his promise to our fore-bearers and they will be reunited in the coming of the Messiah.

Amen, and so should be the Almighty's will.

~ Tombstones Uncovered ~

The following images are of tombstones that were uncovered by visitors or they became visible after ground erosion. It seems that care was taken to layout the stones together in a grouping. Tombstone fragments are found throughout the cemetery, but fortunately, the graves themselves seem undisturbed.

You will notice in some of the images that when the wall was constructed, or reconstructed, some tombstones or tombstone fragments, were placed into the wall.

Disclaimer: The translation of the tombstones below was a very difficult task and there are many stones which have only fragments of information remaining on them.

Despite our best efforts, there may be errors. If you discover an error or have the required information from your sources, please click HERE and let us know the file name(s) and your correction(s).
Thank you.
