Gyöngyös Religious

~ Religious Life ~

The prehistory of the Gyöngyös Jewish community—as perhaps all prehistories—is hidden by the mists of time. The sources found mention of Jews in 38 places in the Hungary of the late Middle Ages. We know little of their lives and while charters speak of several cemeteries and houses of prayer, we know only a few of them. Medieval synagogues were found by the archaeologists at Sopron and Buda and there is early reference to Gyöngyös appearing in the Jewish written material in the middle of the l5th century. This book, with a little simplification, will argue that Jews had been living in the town continually from the l5th century.

After the Mohács disaster, Jews were generally driven out of Hungarian towns. Their situation, however, was by no means the same in the three parts of the divided Hungary. Their condition was best in the areas of Turkish supremacy, which is now the most interesting to us. Not only did they enjoy religious tolerance, but they also started to handle financial and trade matters. Their role was preserved in Gyöngyös, supported by the fact that when, in 1657, the Rabbi of Nándorfehérvár, Simcha ben Gerson Ha-Kóhen, listed the towns which were authorized to issue ritual divorce documents—he included Gyöngyös. The list probably represents the situation at the turn of the century, because it claims to be valid for the times of the Rabbi's grandfather, Simcha bár Chájim, Rabbi of Buda. The appearance of Gyöngyös in the "Book of Names" makes it very probable that there was a Jewish religious community in Gyöngyös in the 1600s. Other than the aforementioned, very little is known about the life and living conditions of Jews living in Gyöngyös in medieval times.

Throughout the 18th century, establishing a synagogue and assigning a rabbi was banned, however, it is quite likely that the community—by this time growing both in numbers and economic strength—was able to outsmart these provincial and local regulations.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a 21-member body governed the community. The council was elected yearly, usually at the end of December.

One of the most respectful tasks of Judaism has always been caring for the sick and to ensure that the dead is buried and mourned properly. The Chevra Kadisha (burial society) was established in 1795, from 1830 onwards, they regularly kept burial records.

The location of the cemetery was marked off in April, 1803. In 1837, the Community applied for a 1600-quadrate (about 5 square kilometers) additional area to expand the cemetery. It would have been too close to Gyöngyös;, therefore, a separate site was assigned on its western side. In 1840, permission was granted to erect a stone wall around the cemetery. By this time, the community grew so strong that, apart from financial grants, it was also able to offer loans to its members.

The first synagogue was erected in 1820 on the shore of the stream Nagypatak. Towards the south, the site was connected with the ORCZY Estate, on which Jews had been living in large numbers. The building, designed by a local master builder, Károly RÁBL, was altered in 1826. Its outer dimensions were 12.60 by 28.30 meters and the height of the ledge was 8.5 meters. Behind the open parvis (portico), the staircase of the women's balcony enclosed the entrance hall, through which one could enter the synagogue's main hall. The women's balcony, situated on the west side—between the parvis and the staircases—was stretching by two meters over the inner area. Its facade was shown on post-cards printed before 1889. They all show clearly the three-axle Classicist architecture with the facade ornamented by pilaster strips and capitals. The English text of the former Hebrew inscription read: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. (Psalm 100:4)

During this period, Gyöngyös had the oldest, the largest and the economically strongest community in Heves county, a fact perfectly illustrated by the several, heftily endowed foundations and religious institutions that were established here.

The Gyöngyös foundation-hospital opened in 1838. Among its founders, there were two affluent local Jews. The ritual slaughterhouse, supervised by a town councillor, began to operate in 1845. In 1847, the community's principals were Lipót HIRSCHL and Lipót WEISER. In 1854, the community brought forth a resolution to establish its own hospital. This institution went through several changes in the next 90 years, serving both as a sanatorium, almshouse and hospice. The building, the former home of Graf SZAPARY-ORCZY, was acquired in 1854 for 6,000 Forints. It consisted of three rooms, a large hall and auxiliary rooms, including bathrooms. The estate also had a large garden area. The hospital opened four years later, by which time the necessary funds for the operation of the institution had been collected. Each member of the community donated 60 "krajcars" (kreutzer, small coins, a hundredth of the Forint) for this purpose and the garden area was leased out. The principals failed to obtain funding from the town's magistrate and the Jewish Hospital soon became overshadowed by the larger, and wealthier, foundation-hospital.

The privately funded Gyöngyös Jewish hospital had only eight beds. For an annual membership fee of one Forint, the hospital offered free medical care and other patients were charged on a daily basis. Jewish doctors of Gyöngyös took turns to provide medical services in the hospital. In 1871, four doctors were on duty successively. In 1866, eight injured soldiers were taken here from the battlefield of Königrätz, as documented by several letters of thanks received by the hospital staff later. [ Translator's note: This was the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War, in which the Kingdom of Prussia defeated the Austrian Empire. ] In the 1880s, the hospital was assigned for the treatment of infectious diseases, mainly smallpox and cholera.

Primary education was provided initially in a cheder, a private Jewish religious school. In 1839, a denominational school was founded and later, after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 a municipal public school was established. [ Translator's note: The Compromise re-established the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, separate from and no longer subject to, the Austrian Empire. ] Here, Jewish children studied together with their Catholic and Reformist schoolmates. Prominent members of the Jewish community took an active role in the school committee and in supporting poor pupils. The school operated under more favorable conditions than the crowded Catholic elementary schools. In 1897, László SPITZER, with the help of the local rich, established the Talmud Torah to provide Jewish children with additional religious education, as the standard primary and secondary school curriculum contained only a two-hour per week religious class. The school was free-of-charge.

A local Israelite Women's Society was established in 1872. Their chairwomen came from the richest Jewish families of the Gyöngyös community. The Society played a prominent role in the social services for the poor and sick and it regularly organized charity events, amateur theatricals and balls to collect donations.

In keeping with its new statutes, the Chevra Kadisha was transferred under the supervision of the Status Quo Ante Congregation.

The richest members of the Gyöngyös Congregation were always generous to bequeath to the community money and other valuables. The Gyöngyös municipality also helped religious life by donating money for the building of communal buildings. In 1897, for instance, 1,500 Crowns were transferred to the Jewish Congregation for this purpose. The inauguration of the extended Orthodox prayer house was attended by an official delegation of the municipality. In 1911, the building of the new Orthodox prayer house was subsidized by both the municipality and the central government. The prayer house was finally inaugurated, on 22 January 1913.

The national congress of the Hungarian Jewish Congregations, held in 1868-69, discussed two main subjects: the national representation of Jewish communities and the modernization of Jewish religious life. Both issues strongly divided the communities. Following the congress, three main groups took shape:
  1. Orthodox: Congregations which strictly following the fundamentals of Judaism.

  2. Reformed: Congregations which thought the Jewish communities should become better integrated into local societies.

  3. Status Quo Ante: Congregations which wished everything should stay status quo (the spiritual center was in Debrecen).
At the Congress, the Gyöngyös Congregation was represented by its president, Lipót HIRSCHL, who had also been an elected member of the five-members committee preparing the congress. In Gyöngyös, only a few members wanted to follow the reformist line, the majority preferred to maintain the pre-Congress status quo. Thus, Gyöngyös became one of the largest congregations following the Status Quo Ante concept. In 1871, a small group left the congregation and established a local Orthodox community. This led to several conflicts within the Gyöngyös Jewry as the communal buildings all stayed in the hands of the mainstream, Status Quo Ante community. After the split, the Status Quo Ante community built a new, richly ornamented praying house next to the old synagogue and services were held alternatively in the two buildings. The independent Orthodox prayer house, with a mikvah (ritual bathhouse), was built a few years later, but it burnt down in 1908 and was rebuilt in 1913.

In 1909, the Status Quo Ante community had 450 members and the Orthodox community had 65 members.

Successive presidents of the Status Quo Ante community were: József BOGDÁNY, Ignác BERNÁT, László SPITZER (1897-1901), Ignác KÁLMÁN (1901-1906) and Jakab RUSZ (1906-1924). In 1909, the head of the Orthodox congregation was Soma BERKOVITS, and its Chief Rabbi was Rabbi Antal JUNGREISZ. Generally, the president was elected from among the richest, most influential and most active members of the congregation. These qualities were necessary for the office holder to represent the interests of the community effectively, and to establish and maintain cordial relations with other denominations.

Gyöngyös often was the victim of devastating fires. The worst struck in 1917 when the synagogue, built in 1816, and the offices of the congregation also burnt down.

By 1920, a temporary praying house and the officials' quarters were erected. Soon the mikvah and the slaughterhouse were also completed. Finally a fascinating new temple was built with the financial help of the Gyöngyös municipality. According to reports of the day, the two communities worked shoulder-to-shoulder in the misfortune. The Orthodox community even offered its mikvah to the members of the rival community, in the hope that "the two sister organizations would continue to co-exist in warm friendship and loving kindness." Nonetheless, they maintained separate slaughterhouses and Talmud Torah schools.

In 1929, tender bids were invited for the reconstruction of the synagogue destroyed by the fire. Of the four bidders, the design of architects Lipót BAUMHORN and Győző SOMOGYI was announced as the winner. When completed, the new synagogue— Hungary's second largest synagogue outside Budapest—with its monumental size as one of its most characteristic properties. Its width was 27.70 meters and length 36.80 meters. The center of the building formed the shape of a Greek cross and its central square covered with a dome. The women's balconies were placed in the extensions of the central cross.

One of the chief rabbis serving the Status Quo Ante community of Gyöngyös for several decades, Rabbi Hermann L. FEIGL was born in the village of Ada in 1872. After graduation, he took classes at the Pozsony (now Bratislava) rabbinical college. He began his service in Gyöngyös in 1897. Rabbi FEIGL translated eight chapters of Maimonedes's Mishneh Torah (published in the Jewish weekly Egyenlőség) and wrote several essays and books including Goethe and the Jewish Bible published in the Yearbook of the Literary Society of Israelite Hungarians (IMIT) in 1905. During WWI, Rabbi FEIGL successfully lobbied for Jewish soldiers to be permitted to keep Friday evening rituals. He carried on a lively correspondence with Prime Minister István TISZA and exchanged views on issues of theological philosophy with minister József VASS. Rabbi FEIGL saved the ritual objects of the synagogue during the 1917 fire. In the 1930s, Rabbi FEIGL was member of several political and cultural organizations including the municipal council, the national Rabbi Association, IMIT and the National Association of Israelite Status Quo Ante Congregations.

The ratio of the Orthodox community, which split from the Status Quo Ante mainstream in 1871, remained about ten percent until 1944. Their senior office holders were Chief Rabbi Antal JUNGREISZ, President Soma BERKOVITS, Vice-president Mór ROTH and Treasurer Salamon JAKOBOVITS.

~ Rabbis ~

The first rabbi of the community was Rabbi Feivel (Asher) BOSKOVITZ. He was succeeded by Rabbi Wolf LIPPE who officiated 1840-50, and was a noted bibliophile. Rabbi Lázár FÜRST (1853-1893) founded a yeshivah in the town.

Rabbi Asher Anshel JUNGREIS (1874-1941) was born Moshe Nathan ha-Levi JUNGREIS in Tiszafüred, Hungary where his father was rabbi. He followed in the footsteps of his prominent rabbinical family and was appointed rabbi of Gyongyos in 1899. He wrote Sefer Zakhor veShamor (Commentary to the Pentateuch) [2 vol., Budapest 1938]. After his passing in 1941, his son, Rabbi Yosef Duvid JUNGREIS succeeded him in 1942 as rabbi of the Orthodox congregation. Rabbi Yacov NEUFELD, son-in-law of Rabbi Usher Anshel JUNGREIS, was dayan (judge). Both Rabbi Yosef Duvid JUNGREIS and Rabbi Yacov NEUFELD were murdered in Auschwitz.

In 1897, Rabbi Yomtov Lipman Tzvi FEIGL was appointed rabbi of the Statue Quo congregation. He also was murdered in Auschwitz.

Gyöngyös had four Jewish cemeteries, but today there is only one remaining:

  • First cemetery: The first known cemetery was located in the north part of Felsõvárosi (Upper town) and dates from the end of the 18th century. The Jewish part of the cemetery was very small and was full within a short period of time. The newer portion of the cemetery is in the southern part and the two parts of the cemetery are divided by a brook.

  • Orthodox cemetery: The orthodox cemetery was located at 2600 Balassagyarmat, Hunyadi útca 24.

  • Third cemetery: The third cemetery was located at 2616 Keszeg, Temetõ útca

  • Fourth cemetery: The fourth cemetery dates from 1837 and is located west of town, on the south side of the road to Gyöngyöstarján. It is surrounded by fields and a stone wall. In 1951, the oldest gravestones were moved here from the former Jewish cemeteries (pre-1824 and pre-1837). Hundreds of local tuff, red marble, and granite gravestones (the oldest from 1680) and family vaults sit in a severely overgrown and neglected site. The oldest gravestones are local volcanic stone and the later ones are mainly red marble. Many granite obelisks from the second half of the 19th century remain. In the southern part of the cemetery, there is a Holocaust memorial and WWI memorial. The ruined Chevra Kadisha (burial society) building was there by the side of the road near the main entrance in 2001, but in today, it is no longer there. (updated 2010)
