Mandel Family

The photos below show some of the descendants of Ira and Charcha Mandel.  Records from the Lviv Archives show Ira and Charcha living in Bukachevtsy as early as the 1860's.

This photo, taken about 1910, immediately after their immigration to New York, shows Pauline (Pesha) Mandel Pepper on the left and her twin, Helen (Henia) Mandel Jacobs on the right.  Pauline and Helen were the daughters of Menachem Zalmon Mandel and Rose (Rusha) Winz Mandel and the granddaughters of Ira and Charcha Mandel and Joel and Pesse Feldbau Winz (of Burzstyn).

Clara Mandel Bleiweiss posed for the photographer in New York about 1912.  Clara, a first cousin of Helen and Pauline, was the daughter of Avraham Mandel and Frieda Ebert Mandel and the granddaughter of Ira and Charcha Mandel and Sam and Sylvia Gross Ebert.  Clara, her husband Joseph, and baby Sylvia and her mother Frieda all died within the same week in 1919, during the Influenza Epidemic.

The following photos were taken in Bukachevtsy in 1924 at the time of the wedding of Joel (aka Zincha) Mandel to Berta Eisensher.  Joel, a brother of Helen and Pauline, was the son of Menachem Zalmon Mandel and Rose (Rusha) Winz Mandel, the grandson of Ira and Charcha Mandel and and Joel and Pesse Feldbau Winz (of Burzstyn).

Hinda and Sala Mandel, c. 1933

These were the last photos of Hinda and Sala Mandel that the family had until your webmaster was contacted by  Rosalie Lawrence and Ruth Holler Smith, the daughters of Sala Holler.  Apparently Sala Holler was friends with Sala Mandel and had several photos of Sala Mandel as an adult.  With some identification by Solomon Mandel, son of Joel and Berta Mandel, we now have photos of Sala and Hinda in the years immediately preceding World War II.  See the
Holler Family Photos and the Betar Photos.

L to r:  Perel Glogower Mandel, Pauline Mandel Pepper, and Charcha Mandel Lempl in Triskovitz (Truskavets), Poland (now Ukraine) in 1931.  Pauline visited Bukaczowce from New York at this time and she, her sister Charcha, and sister-in-law Perel traveled to Triskovitz, which was a spa.

Photos  donated by Linda Cantor, Pauline's granddaughter, great-granddaughter of Solomon and Rose Mandel, and great-great granddaughter of Ira and Charna Mandel and Joel and Pesse Feldbau Winz.
