In the 1880's, Rabbi David Ha'levi WEISS served as shochet and mohel (one who performs circumcisions). He was born in nearby village of Ilnitsa to Reb Yisroel Mendel. He must have lived in Brid till about 1895, then he moved to Vynogradiv (Sevluš) to live nearby his daughter where he eventually died. |

By 1941, Brid had a synagogue, mikva and cemetery. |
|||
Many of the young were members of the Zionist youth movements, such as Hashomer Hatzair, Bnei Akiva and Betar. |
|||
The last shochet in Brid was Rabbi Hersh Avigdor FRIEDMAN who was born there to Reb Yaakov also known as 'Yankel the Shuster (shoemaker). |

~ Brid Synagogue ~ |

---|---|---|---|
The synagogue is located along the highway. Of particular note, in the basement, some names were found inscribed in Hebrew into the beams. Speculation is this could be the Hebrew names of the lumbermen or perhaps children inscribing their names into the beams, as children do on their school desks. |

~ Brid Cemetery ~ |
---|
Jewish families that lived in Brid, and other nearby villages of Szobatin and Deskofalva/Deshkovitch and at times for members of Valosk-Pohorne community as well, used the Brid cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones. |
The cemetery is behind a private home along the highway with a wall that was constructed around the cemetery many years ago, presumably by descendants. Many of the tombstones have been set in concrete bases, to keep them from toppling. We found the former synagogue building and photographed
it. |
In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries of the Zakarpats'ka oblast. |
