Brid Religious

~ Religious Life ~

Brid was originally affiliated to the rabbinate of nearby Bilke and after 1910 to Irshava. They never had their own Rabbi in Brid, however, there was always a shochet (ritual slaughterer) who would also serve as a Dayan (Judge). Brid had various holy and great people living there as mentioned later on.

By 1826, there are records of the burial of the first Rabbi of Chust Rabbi Yaakov GRUNWALD who died suddenly in Brid, just before Passover and was buried there. Rabbi GRUNWALD had traveled to Brid after being asked to check the water mill so that it could be used to grind flour for the baking of matzos (unleavened bread) and, he died while he was there. He was known as a great and holy man and his grave became a popular praying spot for the village people who often saw their prayers being answered after visiting and praying by his grave.

In later years, approximately 1840-1850, there was a certain Rabbi David Ha'levi KLEIN, also known as "Reb Duvid'l Brid'er" who served as Dayan. He was orphaned at a young age and brought up by the holy Rabbi Zvi Elimelech of Dinov, the "Bnei Yisaschar" supposedly while he served as Rabbi of Munkács. Rabbi KLEIN died at a young age on Chol Hamoed Succos in the year 5618/1858 and was buried in nearby Belki (Bilke). It seems that he served as Rabbi in Bilke towards the end of his life, which may be the reason for being buried there. His matseivah (tombstone) is still standing and has been lately restored by his descendants.

Shortly after, Rabbi Ahron Zvi TERKELTAUB (TAUB), also known as the "Brid'er Rebbe" and a great and holy tsadik (righteous one), settled in Brid. Rabbi TERKELTAUB was born in Pszemysl, Galicia (1812), but settled as a young man in the village of Hidegpatak, Hungary close to the town of Volove, nearby the Polish border, where he served for some years as a shochet. Eventually he settled in Brid where he soon became famed as a "Wonder Rabbi" to the many miracles people witnessed after seeking his guidance and blessing. Rabbi TERKELTAUB lived in Brid from approximately 1865-1880 and was known as the Brid'er Rebbe.

Towards the end of his life, after his wife, Esther Hentsha's passing in 5639/1879 (she is buried in Brid), he moved to nearby Munkács where he died 20 Tevet 5643. His burial place was eventually moved to the new cemetery in Mukacheve. Some of his descendants, KATZ and ROSENBERG families, lived in Brid until the deportation.

In the 1880's, Rabbi David Ha'levi WEISS served as shochet and mohel (one who performs circumcisions). He was born in nearby village of Ilnitsa to Reb Yisroel Mendel. He must have lived in Brid till about 1895, then he moved to Vynogradiv (Sevluš) to live nearby his daughter where he eventually died.

Reb Yosef Zvi KATZ, a sofer (scribe) in Brid for many years. Around 1860, he married Sure Miryam TERKELTAUB, daughter of Reb Ahron Zvi, the Bridder rebbe. Sure Miryam died 20 Adar 5683/1923 and is buried in Brid, while Rabbi Yosef Zvi KATZ died in Munkács 25 Tishrei 5685/1924 and is buried in the new Mukacheve (Munkács) cemetery.

After Rabbi WEISS, Rabbi David KAHANA-GELB served as shochet. Rabbi KAHANA-GELB married Rivka, the daughter of Reb Yosef Zvi KATZ from Brid. Around 1910, he was accepted as shochet in Munkács where he lived until the deportation. He was murdered in Auschwitz along with his wife.

Shochet in Brid until 1910

During the 1930s, Zionist and Orthodox organizations were active among Jewish youth.

By 1941, Brid had a synagogue, mikva and cemetery.

Many of the young were members of the Zionist youth movements, such as Hashomer Hatzair, Bnei Akiva and Betar.

The last shochet in Brid was Rabbi Hersh Avigdor FRIEDMAN who was born there to Reb Yaakov also known as 'Yankel the Shuster (shoemaker).

Around 120 families lived in Brid before the war, among them were the SHTEINBERGER, AKERMAN, EKSHTEIN, ROSENBERG, KATZ, ROTH, WEISZ, HOROWITZ-BARMINKA, WEBER and EISDORFER families.

Some additional notes:

  • Mordche Zev SCHONFELD is Marton SHONFELD, mentioned in the Radix directory as owning a Guest house.

  • The mill owner, Moses NEIMAN married Yaakov STEINBERGER's daughter Miriam. Moses NEIMAN was well to do, but moved to Israel in the 1930's and is buried in the Mount of Olives cemetery.

  • Shmiel Leib ROSENBERG had a hardware store and also sold tobacco. Also, he had a distilery with his brother-in-law Yaakov KATZ, where they would make Slivovitz and sell it in the whole area until it was closed by the Czechoslovakian's. Afterwards, they would make Matzos.

~ Brid Synagogue ~

The synagogue is located along the highway. Of particular note, in the basement, some names were found inscribed in Hebrew into the beams. Speculation is this could be the Hebrew names of the lumbermen or perhaps children inscribing their names into the beams, as children do on their school desks.

~ Brid Cemetery ~

Jewish families that lived in Brid, and other nearby villages of Szobatin and Deskofalva/Deshkovitch and at times for members of Valosk-Pohorne community as well, used the Brid cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones.

The cemetery is behind a private home along the highway with a wall that was constructed around the cemetery many years ago, presumably by descendants. Many of the tombstones have been set in concrete bases, to keep them from toppling. We found the former synagogue building and photographed it.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries of the Zakarpats'ka oblast.
