From 1938 until 1941, serious concerns arose when the zsidótörvényeket (anti-Semitic laws) were introduced, including limiting the proportion of Jews employed in professions such as in the press, cinema, actors, lawyers, engineers, medical chambers and limited the number of Jews being issued iparengedélyek (licences) for marriage, etc. felekezetbeliekkel.

To Rabbi HIRSH's undying credit, they never actually implemented the anti-Semitic measures in Beregovo, i.e. elszabotálták (they sabotaged) and ignored them. This was largely due to the excellent relations amongst Jews and non-Jews that included the support of Fekésházy (Deputy sherriff) Zoltán ALISPÁN, Dr. Kálmán HUBAY polgármesterrel (mayor), Jeno SZUTOR református lelkésszel (Reformed priest), Dr. FRANCIS római katolikus prelátussal (Roman Catholic prelate), Jeno ORTUTAY görög katolikus kanonokkal (Greek Catholic canon), with members of the Parliament and others.

In 1941, about 500 Jews were drafted into the Hungarian labor battalions, most being sent to the eastern front, where they perished. About 250 Jews, lacking Hungarian citizenship, were deported to German-occupied territory in the Ukraine and murdered there.

In the April of 1944, after the German occupation of Hungary, a temporary ghetto was created in Beregszász. All of the Jews living in and nearby Beregszász were rounded up and herded into the brick factory ghetto located in the KONT and VÁLY Brick Factories and the facilities of adjacent so-called, WEISZ Farm. There they were interned for a month and a half.

The Ministry of the Interior issued decree 61/1944 on 7 April 1944, paraphrased from the Hungarian, "Regulation of Jewish issues are now removed from the hands of local authorities and will now be enforced by the Hungarian Gendarmerie."

Rabbi HIRSH and other influential people recognized the impact of this decree and tried to intercede, but they were unsuccessful. It was likely that in the most difficult of hours, the only thing Rabbi HIRSH could do was provide psychological comfort to his flock, trying to keep alive their hope.

In mid-May 1945, almost 11,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz from the Berehove ghetto in four transports: 3,600 from Berehove and 7,400 from the surrounding area. They forced them into wagons which transported the Jews by train to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The first transport left on 16 May 1944 and the last on 29 May 1944.

Some people say that Rabbi HIRSH was murdered in Auschwitz and according to others, it was in Buchenwald, but regardless, he never was seen again.

May his and all other martyr souls rest in peace.

Film: At the Alter of Her Memories
Produced and Directed by:
Tova BECK-FRIEDMAN

Summary: At age seventeen, following her liberation from Bergen-Belsen, Bracha (née BECK) GHILAI came to Israel to start her life over. As part of her healing process, she established a puppet theater.

Sixty years later, surrounded by her puppets, Bracha recalls the dire events of her youth. Through a mix of storytelling, puppetry and archival photographs, we experience the anguish of her narrative while she unlocks chapters from her painful past. Her stories range from the heart-wrenching description of her separation from her nephew, Nisan, to the powerful and poignant account of incredible power of endurance, survival and the guilt that accompanies it. Tzipi KICHLER, Director, Center For Study Of The Holocaust Holon, Israel: "This film left me speechless, choking with emotions. The film is a master piece! It weaves puppetry within the testimony with much sensitivity; a delicate balance between horrors versus internal courage. The integration of places, landscape, words and atmosphere is striking. The film permeates into our innermost layer of existence. I have seen many testimonial films, but At the Altar of Her Memories is head and shoulder above them."
