Verkhnedneprovsk is located in the Kamianske Raion, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province) of south-central Ukraine. It was formerly part of the Yekaterinoslav Gubernia of the Russian Empire.
Verkhnedneprovsk (see inset map) lies on the Dnieper (Dnipro) River. The nearest large city is Dnipro (formerly named Dnepropetrovsk, and before that, Ekaterinoslav, until 1926), about 45 miles / 72 km to the southeast. Kamianske, another port city along the Dnieper, is 16 miles/ 25 km from Verkhnedneprovsk.
Kremenchuk, on the opposite side of the Dnieper and in the Poltava region, is also noted on the map since there was notable commercial activity among Verkhnedneprovsk, Ekaterinslav and Kremenchuk in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, as well as population movements - something to keep in mind when looking for ancestors. (I have one ancestor who was born in Verkhnedneprovsk, moved as a child to Ekterinoslav, and married in Kremenchuk. One of her siblings moved as an adult to Kremenchuk, but then married in Ekaterinoslav; just two examples among others). This movement is important to know since there are no known surviving Verkhnedneprovsk Jewish vital records... but you may find something in other towns. [Note: map does not show all towns and cities in the area; nor all towns/cities involved in mutual commercial activities (such as Krivoy Rog - now Kryvyi Rih - further south).
The name Verkhnedneprovsk means place in the Upper Dnepr (Dnieper):
Verkhne - Upper
Dnepr - name of the river
ovsk - suffix meaning "belong to"
