Other Connections:

It was natural that emigrants from the one shtetl or region would follow each other from those same shtetls and settle together; so that in the first generation of immigration one could find that relatives from Europe would tend to settle together in the same towns. This led to some small towns with Jews from the same towns or regions in Europe. In one such case, we know that many from Ushachi settled at least in the following communities:

        1. Sheboygan, Wisconsin
        1. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

As we identify other such towns, we will list them.

Background Information

History:

Many thanks to Harry Leich of the Library of Congress, European Division, for his research and translation. The following information is based upon material from "Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slavic Countries," published by Bronislaw Chlebowski, Volume 12, Warsaw, 1892.

For many years Ushachi was part of Poland and was known as Usazacz, It was both a town and an estate, located on the Uszacza river, in Lepelski county, of the third Polish district. During the 1890's, the town contained 128 houses, 652 inhabitants, parish church, two Jewish prayer houses, district police and community station, bridge, and water powered mill. The estate contained 7400 acres of court land, located in the northwest part of the county. It bordered the Woroniecz, Kublicze (Kublichi), Hutowo, Bielsk, Czerstwiaty districts of Lepelski county, and the Turowla district of Polotsk county.

In 1624, the estates of Uszacz belonged to Jozef Klonowski of Polotsk; in 1672 to Dawid Radziminski Frackiewicz and his wife Elzbieta from Grotkowski. The property was next owned by Kasper Frackiewicz who sold it to Konstanty Szczytt. It passed to Krzysztof Szczytt, castellan of Smolensk, whose wife Anna from Zawlsz left it in 1721 to Jan Zaba, Voyevode of Minsk. Next owned by Lipskie Zaba, from whom Tadeusz Zaba, voyevode of Polotsk, acquired it. Then his daughter, Cecylia Marcinkiewiczowa, turned the estate over to her daughter Alina countess Platerowa, after which it passed to her son Gustaw count Plater.

There were Dominicans [monks?] in Uszacz, founded in 1716 under Hieronim Zaba, under-voyevode of Polotsk, together with his wife Katarzyna from Protaszeciz. Benefactors of the monastery were Jan Zaba, voyevode of Minsk, and his daughter-in-law Cecylia z Lipskich Zabina. There was a county school attached to the monastery. After 1772 Uszacz was the chief town in the remaining part of Polotsk province. In the vicinity of the town are graves dating back to the [stoczonych] wars of 1812.

Population: 807 Jews before World War II (according to "Where Once We Walked" by Gary Mokotoff & Sallyann Amdur Sack, Avotaynu, 1991)

Economy: (under research, looking for help)

Ushachi Factoids:

·         Ushachi was the birth place of the late great violinist Jasha Heifitz (according to my mother, ROSALYN (PERLSON) KAUFMAN)

·         The Jews of Ushachi spoke and wrote in Yiddish, except for religious services which were conducted in Hebrew. Very few Ushachi Jews spoke Russian.

·         In 1919 or 1920, Rosalyn Perlson was kidnapped by a Cossack officer who wanted to marry her. She was ransomed back to safety by her mother Riva (Furman) Perlson who owned a general store. Riva's husband Max and his brothers had already emigrated to the United States, leaving his family behind.

·         Chaim Zhitlowsky (1865 – 1940) Influential Socialist-Naturalist and author was born in Ushachi.  He was educated in Germany and Switzerland where he studied medicine at the University of Zurich.  It was there he formed a group of Socialist Revolutionaries.  He later went through several phases of political beliefs and activities; at times he was a Sociality, a Territorialist, and active Zionist and an ardent Yiddishist.

·         The following appears in “World War II Plus 55” by David H. Lippman :

January 13, 1942... The rising tide of Nazi atrocities provokes an Allied response in London. The representatives of nine occupied countries there sign a declaration that all those guilty of "war crimes" will be punished after the war. General Sikorski signs for Poland and General Charles De Gaulle for France. Among their "principal war aims" is "the punishment, through the channels of organized justice, of those guilty of, or responsible for, these crimes, whether they have ordered them, perpetrated them, or participated in them."

January 14, 1942...Nazi forces react to the Allied war crimes declaration the day before by leading 807 Byelorussian Jews to a pit near the village of Ushachi, and shooting them. As the Jews lie dying, local peasants who have witnessed the massacre climb down into the pit to pull what gold they can from the teeth of the dead and dying. At nearby Kublichi, 925 Jews are murdered, and local peasants again loot the dead.

The following link takes you to a “yahadmap” interview with a Ushachi resident who was a child at the time of the slaughter and witnessed the event.  Be prepared to be disturbed by the indifference of the witness.

http://www.yahadmap.org/#village/ushachi-vitebsk-belarus.477

In the late 1950s the local Jews Khona Futerman and Ruvim Asman initiated the erection of a one-meter-high monument at the murder site in Ushachi. The Russian inscription said:"Comrades! Bow your heads in memory of those who were killed. On January 6, 1942 the fascist executioners shot to death 925 residents of the urban settlement of Ushachi and the village of Kublichi."
In 1975 the local authorities renovated the monument, to which they affixed the following Russian inscription: "In this place on January 14, 1942 925 Soviet civilians, residents of the urban settlement of Ushachi and the village of Kublichi, were brutally shot to death." Once again there was no reference to the Jewish identity of the victims.

The monument was renovated again in the early 2000s.

·         Jews of Ushachi are known to have immigrated to Sheboygan and Milwaukee, Wisconsin

David Finko (Finkelstein) is the eldest grandson of Zalmon Furman.  A naval architect in the Soviet Union, who emigrated to the USA to pursue his true calling as a composer, Finko wrote the following in his memoirs:

“My maternal grandparents lived in Byelorussia (White Russia) in the small town of Ushatchy, which was in the Lepel district of the Vitebsk province. My maternal grandfather was Zalman Furman.  He was born in 1886 in Ushatchy, and he owned a small one-story house where he also had a photographic studio….My grandfather was also a cantor in the local synagogue; he was not salaried, but was modestly paid for singing on holidays.  I remember his very expressive sobbing singing which used to impress people a lot and caused their tears.  I think his sobbing singing strongly influenced my own music…… My maternal grandmother was called Brusya, and she came from the family of Zeltsburg…..There were five children in the Zeltxburg family: three daughters –Livsa, Brusya and Hanna-Blumeh—and two sons—Aba-Dovid and Moyshe-Ekhiel. My grandmother Brusya was born in Ushatchy in 1892, and all her life she was a housewife.  She had four children: my mother Raisa (born July 4, 1914), another daughter Yudasya (born in 1918, died of cancer is Los Angeles in 1984), sons Abraham (born in 1922, killed in WWII in 1941) and Isaak (born in 1926).

In May of 1941 my mother went to Ushatchy to her parents with me and my baby sister Shulamit.  My mother used to stay at her parents’ house every summer since her marriage.  It was great joy to visit my grandparents and Ushatchy….On June 22 the German army invaded the Soviet Union.  In the afternoon of the same day, my mother was urged to leave Ushatchy immediately….” They were some of the last Jews to leave Ushatchy alive.

My maternal grandparents were Orthodox Jews.  They performed all religious rituals in Hebrew, but they spoke at home only in Yiddish; they knew very little Russian.  They both died at the same time in 1942.  They were shot by the SS Nazi soldiers together with all the Jews of Ushatchy.  Before their execution, my grandparents dug their graves, which was the usual way in which the Nazis did their jobs. “

David passed away in December of 2021 but not until after giving an oral history interview to the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum.  That interview can be heard at the link below:

PHOTO TOUR:

We are fortunate to be able to offer a photo tour of Ushachi, circa 1920/1930. The photographer was Zalmon Furman, High Holy Days cantor and proprietor of A. Furman photography studio (started by his father Avraham Furman). These photos were actually postcards sent by Zalmon to his sister Riva Perlson, who by 1923, had followed her husband Max to Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA). The occasional commentary below the picture in italics are quotes and paraphrases from the backs of post cards originally written in Yiddish. Italics in parentheses () indicate comments that have been added for clarification. These messages went untranslated for over 70 years until the kind and generous efforts of Joseph Rosin (Haifa, Israel) brought them back to life.

The final two cards, “Apple Picking” and “Skyline” were found in 2023 by Tatiana Chernova and her husband in Kemerovo, in Kurbass, in Siberia.  They were sent by her husband’s grandfather (Ignatiy Stepanovich Chernov) in 1925 from Ushachi to his family in Siberia while he worked in Ushachi for a short time

OUR TOUR GUIDE, ZALMON FURMAN

"I send you this picture on the occasion of the remembrance day (Yahrtzeit) of our father's death. I considered whether or not o send it to you because I was afraid to cause harm to your frail health, but none the less I thought that it would be your wish is to have it. Be strong and healthy We know that nobody lives forever. We all will die too, but when we are living we must live and keep ourselves healthy."

Inscription on the tombstone: Avraham son of Nathan Furman died on the fifteenth day of Teveth 5680 (1920)

Zalmon Furman’s Family:

Rashe, Udashe, Avraham, Yitshak Eidle & Yashke.”  Aug 1932

"Here you see my children laughing, give (help) God that they always will laugh and be joyful. Yours Zalmon, 2/7/32."

"This is the card of Manke, Udashe, Avraham'l and Eidle Itske's, and our cat too."

And here is the same Itsele standing with a rifle in his hands at his post.  No more Cheder, no more Tsitses, only the rifle.  We live in our free country and build a new Socialist life of equality and freedom.  And we are always ready to give the proper blow to all those who are thinking to disturb our free life, your Zalmon."

THE STREETS AND THE PEOPLE OF USHACHI

Titled: Oktiabr’skaia Street Scene. This is the view traveling up the hill toward the Cathedral. This is the street where the Furman and Perlson families lived.

Note:  In October 1941, the Nazis created the ghetto on Oktiabr’skaia street, by surrounding it with a barbed wire fence.

Titled: CO-OP. The shoemaker shop on the left, the Co-op on the right. (Believed by Howard Kaufman to be the Co-op owned by the Furman family ).

Titled: Oktiabr’skaia Street Scene. This too is the street where the Furman and Perlson families lived. The Cathedral is just ahead, and the Co-op on the right along with many Ushachi residents.

The Chevrah Kadisha: "Here are the manufacturers and undertakers. It was photographed at Lag baOmer at the cemetery. There was made then pies. You can also see there mother's tombstone the white one at the edge. From the other edge Merfe Baba. You can see that the Chevrah Kadisha was a big society that arranged from time to time parties where eating and drinking Vodka was a custom. Only a few of them actually dealt with the dead."

Note: The “killing pit” where the slaughter of Ushachi and Kublichi Jews took place is near the cemetery.

The Construction crew: "Here behind Simche's garden is a masonry building in work. Here you can see many acquaintances."

The 1931 High School Graduating Class. The center picture above the desk is Zalmon's daughter Raisa Furman. Raisa is the mother of David Finko, acclaimed composer, conductor, pianist, and violinist who came to the United States in the 1970's. As a young child, Mr. Finko spent his summers with his mother at the Furman home in Ushachi, and has vivid memories of narrowly escaping the nazi invasion. Mr. Finko has written numerous symphonies, concertos and operas, including the music for the opera "Abraham and Hanna." This opera is the story of Treblinka, the camp of death for over one million Jews. Treblinka opened in July 1942, and on August 2, 1943, some two hundred inmates staged a revolt; only forty made it through the barbed-wire fences, but they had destroyed the camp. The events in "Abraham and Hanna" follow the records; parts of the dialogue and thought come out of those documents. Only the characters Abraham and Hannah are imaginary.

The Ushachi “Skyline”

Message on reverse:  Greetings from Ushachi, the view of which is attached on the back, this is the place that is 3 versts away from our garden.  Inreality, Ushachi is not like that, one street, dusty with a Jewish population of 200 houses.  All that is of interest is the white church (orthodox) and the church (catholic) and nothing else.  It’s autumn here.

THE MEMOIRS OF A USHACHI NATIVE

Gary Jacobs is the grandson and great-nephew of Ushachi natives Rose (ASMAN) Schain and Ben Asman. He has generously shared their remembrances with us.

ASMAN FAMILY HISTORY - Part 1

Recorded on tape by ROSE (ASMAN) SCHAIN (1907-1976) as she spoke to her grandchildren Marcie and Joel Spitz as part of a school project. Transcribed by her grandson, Gary Jacobs.

Copyright 1999 - Gary Jacobs (Reprinted with Permission)

Hi, Marcie and Joel (Spitz). Your mom (Barbara Schain Spitz) told me that you will be getting an assignment about the roots of your family tree, or background. So, if it will be helpful to you, I will write about myself from your mom's side.

I was born in Russia in 1907 in a small village called Ushatz, too small to be on the map. A few things that I can remember are; that our house was made from logs, and was trimmed with bright yellow shutters. It had a living room and two bedrooms. A built-in brick oven that was used for both cooking and heating. There was no inside plumbing, and water was brought in from the village well. We had a garden, and I think a cow to supply us with milk.

There were no cars in the village, and one time we were notified that a carriage would come through WITHOUT A HORSE. Everyone stood around watching, and a small car drove through, leaving a cloud of dust, and everyone watched until it disappeared.

Another thing I remember, is, that when there was a wedding, the whole bridal party paraded through the street with lit candles to the synagogue. I faintly remember my father (Karl Asman (1876 - 1941)) when we lived there. He was a blacksmith, and he left three years before we did to the "Land of Opportunity" - America.

He told my mother (Masha Turchen Asman 1870 - 1960) that he would make a lot of money, and come back home. He went to Sheboygan, Wisconsin to where my three uncles preceded him, to the "golden land". (Isac Turchen (1887 - 1934), Joseph Turchen (1862 - 1945) and Morris Turchen (1889 - 1926). Motye Turchen (born 1880) stayed in Ushatz).

They got him a job in a furniture factory, and the first two years, he was not happy there. Then, when he accumulated enough money to buy a horse and wagon, he went out on his own, selling things to the farmers. He then began to write to my mother that it would be better for us to come there.

I was six years old (1913), and Uncle Ben (Asman (1899 - 1992)) was thirteen, and Aunt Ethel (Schain Segall (1901 - 1976)) was seventeen. Aunt Ethel attended a Catholic school there and Uncle Ben went to Hebrew school. And, I was tutored by a young girl to learn to write Yiddish, together with other children my age.

Aunt Ethel said that she would go to America alone first to see if she liked it, and if she did, she would write us to come. She did go, together with another uncle (Nachman Yosheh Turchin -from whom she got separated in immigration). However, my dad didn't wait for her to decide, and sent us tickets before she arrived.

There were no trains in Ushatz, so my mother hired a peddler coachman to take us to the closest city, which was called Plotsk, forty "versts", that is twenty eight miles away. It was an overnight ride, and about midnight, we stopped at an inn for a snack, and they gave us some pillows to get a little sleep.

From Plotsk, we took the train to the big city of Riga (Lithuania), which was a seaport on the Baltic sea. We took the ship, it sailed for four or five days to Liverpool, England. We were to connect with an ocean liner to travel to America; however, we missed that boat, and had to remain in Liverpool for ten days to get on the next ship.

I remember there were English boys, with high long peaked collars, calling us, I think, "greenhorns". There was an eat shop a few blocks from where we were staying and the owner was giving free tea to the immigrants. Uncle Ben said that he would go and get some. He was gone for a very long time. My mother became worried. Soon, a policeman brought him back. He got lost.

When we got on the ocean liner, I was introduced to salami sausage for the first time. I liked it very much and stuffed myself. I later fed it to the fish in the ocean, and didn't touch it again for many, many years.

While on the ship, it caught fire, and some passengers became hysterical and screamed. Part of the upper deck was made of cement. My mother took my brother and I by the hand and stood on the cement part, thinking it would be safer there. That was the part that probably would sink first.

The total time of the sea and ocean trip was about two weeks. We were on the boat during the High Holy Days. There were services, and Uncle Ben (Asman) read the Torah. He was little for his age, and the people couldn't get over it.

I found a little girlfriend my age and two days before we were to land, we both washed our faces with the ocean saltwater we got through a porthole. My eyes became red, and my mother was worried that they wouldn't let us into America, as they don't want any disease brought in.

We landed at night in Philadelphia, and they didn't let us off the boat until morning. That evening, the sailors all sat in a circle, and sang, what I learned later was "It's a long, long, way to Tipperary".

In the morning, my mother pushed me to get checked out first, and I passed. There were a few passengers that were held back, and they were crying pitifully.

America was a disappointment to me. I expected the streets to be paved with gold. Instead, the brick buildings were black with soot. We were taken by a horse drawn coach to the train depot, and after two days of traveling, we reached our destination, Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

My father met us, and my mother hardly recognized him. He left Russia with a beard, and now, he was cleanshaven.

The first things our relatives did was to give us epsom salts, to "clean out our systems. The year of our arrival was 1914. Woodrow Wilson was president. Soon after, the war broke out.

My brother (Ben Asman) and I were taken to school. I don't know how it could have been done, but my brother went through the eight grades in one year. I made the first and second grade in one year.

Maybe because I was an immigrant, the teachers seemed to like me, they kissed and hugged me. My sister, (Ethel) was too big to go to elementary school and took lessons from a private teacher's, and they both became good friends.

After the first year, my father wanted us to move to Green Bay (Wisconsin) as that was closer to the territory where he traveled for his business, with the horse and wagon.

He used to be gone all week and come home on Friday's. He would be able to get home more often and not have to travel so far.

In Green Bay, we lived in a duplex flat. It was with a living room, two bedrooms, a large kitchen, and big pantry. The bathroom was outside. (Here on the tape the telephone rings. Grandma says to the tape recorder - "Excuse me, the telephone.")

Our landlord lived across the alley from us and they had a girl my age. They had a horse and surrey with a fringe on top and Sundays they would go for a ride, and sometimes, they would take me along.

A couple other things that I remember as a child when we lived there. I went to the grocery store for my mother, and one of the things she asked me to buy was a bottle of cream.

As I walk out of the store, the bottle of cream rolled out of the bag, on the sidewalk, and smashed to pieces. A man came by and saw it and said "Aw, your mother will give you a licking. I'll buy you another bottle". I never forgot his kindness.

Aunt Ethel was a very pretty girl and had a lot of beaus. There were not many cars in those days, and one young man came to see her in a Maxwell car. He gave me a ride for a few blocks. That was a BIG thrill.

I went into the third grade in a neighborhood school. My brother went to high school and my sister took a job in a garment factory and attended night school in the evening.

I continued in the same school through the fifth grade. Then, my parents bought a home in a nice neighborhood. It was just beautiful, for $2,000. It was immaculate, had a front room, sitting room, music or library room, a dining room, kitchen, summer kitchen, and fruit cellar. It had a front porch, a separate wood shed, and a water pump outside.

There were many flowering bushes, roses, lilacs, snowballs, bridal wreaths, honeysuckles, twin sisters, and even climbing roses on the barn. There were also flowers close to the house such as Sweet Williams, Kaiser's Crowns, and more. We also had a grape arbor, which we used to use for a sukkah.

We also had a water pump by the kitchen sink, but no drain pipe so we had to have a large pail underneath the sink cabinet to catch the water. Our bathroom was "air conditioned" - outside.

For heat in the winter we really had a beautiful parlor coal stove. To cook, we had a stove that we would use either with coal or wood.

I enrolled in the sixth grade in Howe school. Whitney school was closer to our house, but Howe school was known to have a better class of students.

My mother (Masha Turchen Asman) was not well, and no doctor in Green Bay could help her. My sister went with her to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and during the two weeks that they were gone, I had to be cook and housekeeper.

At Mayo's the doctor suggested that it would be good for her to go to a sanitarium where she could get care and rest. She didn't want to go. She said "G-d is my doctor".

My sister quit her job and kept house and took care of her and she regained her health.

My brother (Ben) got a job after school delivering meat on a bicycle for a kosher butcher. I would sometime take a little ride on the bicycle "underbar".

I owned a pair of roller skates and enjoyed going to roller skating parties given by the school.

In 1920, my sister (Ethel) became engaged to be married (to Charlie Segall (1901 - 1092)). My parents at that time were inexperienced in making weddings, and my aunt Hanna (Turchen) from Sheboygan came in to help. Our Jewish community then was small, close, and helpful.

On March 7th, the day of the wedding, there was a terrific snowstorm, and very cold. All the soda bottles that were to be used for the dinner or reception froze and cracked.

A Mr. Jake Rosenburg, a member of the community and a friend, was making trips back and forth with his car taking our guests to the temple for the ceremony, and then to the hall where we had dinner and reception and dance. As for me, I tried to make myself look helpful and important, wearing my eighteen hole button shoes.

After the wedding, Aunt Ethel and Uncle Charlie (Segall) went to Pulaski (Wisconsin) for their honeymoon, and opened a store. She tended the store while he went on the road buying raw furs.

My father worked himself up and purchased a truck and sold the horse. We entirely remodeled the house, put in a basement, coal furnace, modern inside plumbing, enclosed our porch with screens and french windows. We had a swing hanging from the ceiling, a couch, and several chairs. We added a four room apartment upstairs for income.

My brother only went to high school for two years and went to vocational school to take up bookkeeping.

When I was a sophomore in high school, my parents opened a clothing store and thought that I could quit school and work in the store. I wanted to continue school, so I took all my subjects in the morning with no study period, and worked in the store afternoons.

To go to college never entered my mind. In my time that was only for the rich. So, besides the required subjects, I took shorthand and typing, business forms, salesmanship, and I think, always, domestic science. I'm proud to say that when I graduated, I was on the honor roll.

My parents gave over the store to my brother, and I continued working there with him and became head saleslady, buyer of ladies and children's ware.

In small towns, there were not many young Jewish boys to go out with. So the different towns gave dances, and the young people from the surrounding towns came to attend. Green Bay gave a "May Ball", Sheboygan a "June Ball", and so forth.

We had relatives in Sheboygan, so we visited them and went to the dance. It was in 1928, that I met Al Schain (1903 - 1972) from Milwaukee. Without a formal introduction, he asked me to dance. This started our romance. My bother (Ben) was dating Grace Shapiro (1906 -1982) from Milwaukee.

Ethel and Charlie used to come to us on Sundays to take their daily baths. They didn't have modern plumbing either at that time. And one time, we had to go away on Sundays, we didn't want to leave the house open, yet we wanted them to be able to get in. So I put a note on the doorknob saying, "The key is under the porch". When I told that to Al (Schain), I never lived it down. What a smart girl he had.

Ben and Grace were married on March 30th, 1930. There was also a big snowstorm. Al (Schain) and I were married June 29th the same year. We went to Elkhart Lake (Wisconsin) for our honeymoon for five days, that's when our money ran out.

We took a darling four room apartment at $55 a month. Ben and Grace lived in Green Bay. I bought a pretty satin black dress trimmed with white for the holidays for $3.75. After a year, we moved to the west side, closer to our friends, into a two bedroom flat.

These were depression years, and people were being laid off every day. When Al came home from work, I always looked on the expression on his face. Finally, the place closed down and he was out of work.

Things, business-wise, did not go so well with Ben and Grace. Also, she missed her family and friends in Milwaukee. So they closed the store and moved back, and for a while, moved in with us. Ben went on the road selling merchandise to farmers like my dad did.

Marilyn (Schain Jacobs), was born on October 5th, 1932 (I think). I was not strong after her birth, and there was nothing I ever wished for more that if I could have a nurse. But, of course, we couldn't afford it. My mother came to help, Grace was there, and Al was home, and there were discussions who was doing more than the other, and that made me sick.

My parents being left alone in Green Bay wanted us back. My dad saw a new empty store, coaxed us to move back, and start a business. We had lost all our savings as the building and loan closed. We had received $750 from an insurance company for an accident Al was in when he got hurt riding in someone else's car, and with that, we started in business.

For six months, we moved in with my parents and hired a girl to take care of the baby and help with the housework, at $3.75 a week. I worked in the store.

Then, we moved in a flat for ourselves. Things were slow at first. The next dress that I bought, for good, was $7.50, and I thought it was quite expensive.

After three years, we were looking for a lot to build our own home. And one time, I met a real estate man, on the street, and he asked me if I would like to see a nice house. I went with him and liked it very much, it was charming. Al went with me to look at it again, and that night, we couldn't sleep, we were so excited, and bought it the next day.

We also bought a car that year. The salesman said it wouldn't look good to have a cheap car in the driveway of a pretty house, and sold us a Buick.

Barbara (Schain Spitz), your mom, was born the new house, August 22nd, in 1937 or 1938. By this time we could afford a beautiful layette for her and a NURSE. We always had a live-in maid. I would make the formula in the morning, give her a bath, and the morning feeding and then go to the store.

In 1938, your great grandfather (Jona Schain (1877 - 1959)), and grand uncles (Isac Schain (1901 - 1989), Joseph Schain (1909 - 1972), Berta Umberg Schain (1911 - 1977), and her husband Leon Schain (1908 - 1985)) came from Sweden to visit us. Your mom (Barbara) was about nine months old, and Marilyn about seven. We enjoyed a beautiful summer with them.

We had very little hardships in bringing up Aunt Marilyn and your mom (Barbara). Marilyn had measles, a tonsillectomy, also a bad rash. Mom had the mumps, chicken pocks, and appendectomy. They caused us no aggravation, only pleasures and pride, as they still are doing, and as also are my dear grandchildren and son-in-laws.

From here on, mom (Barbara Schain Spitz) can continue her life story if she wishes.

Much love and kisses, Your Grandma Schain

P.S. I think both Aunt Marilyn (Jacobs) and mom (Barbara SchainSpitz) led an active and full life. They took dancing lessons, piano and violin, Hebrew school. They were girl scouts, went swimming at the "Y", they were active in B'nai B 'rith, and went to camps from the time they were ten years old, and later, they were camp counselors. They took leadership training courses, mom had some elocution lessons, also art lessons. Mom also had an exchange student living with us for a year. I'm enclosing a clipping from the Washington (High School?)newspaper that mother was a winner of a national contest for letter writing.

I missed telling you that all through junior high school, I took domestic science, and I was very proud that I made my own graduation dress. It was made of light green organdy, and trimmed with hem-stitched ruffles. I also made a hat to match.

Love again, Grandma

ASMAN FAMILY HISTORY - Part 2

(As told by Ben Asman (1899 - 1992) to his great-nephew, Gary Jacobs in December 1989)

Copyright 1999 - Gary Jacobs (Reprinted with permission)

I come from Ushatz (Belorussia), that was the name of the town, in the state of Vitebsk. In Russia, there was like an east and west (side of town) and we lived on the west side of it. And then there was a bridge, and after you went across it, that was the east side.

There was nothing special. We had a home. I don't think it had a floor. It was sand. Every Friday, we used to get some yellow sand and sprinkle it, you know, for Saturday. Of course, we didn't have inside water or inside plumbing. We had women bring us water. We had to pay. They used to go to the river. They would bring us water in two big buckets. So we used to drink that. I think they had a hand pump too [ed. Note: the water woman described can be seen in the lower left hand corner of the "Post Office" picture].

In Russia, there were schools, but no Jewish schools. My mother had a Jewish teacher and he taught us how to write Jewish (Yiddish) how to read, and everything. But we had a Jewish teacher in Hebrew. Hebrew teachers we had. We went to the Hebrew school, and that's where I learned to read the Torah, and all the other things, you see.

It was very cold. In winter, we had a small round stove, and everybody would stand around the stove. And then we had what they called a "rezonka" It was like the table, you know. It was brick and looked like a davenport. It burned wood.

And we were all sitting and enjoying ourselves. We had a lot of fun. We were poor, we didn't have any money.

My mother's name was Marsha, "Masha Miriam" in Yiddish (Masha Turchen Asman (1871 - 1960)). My father (Karl Asman (1870 - 1941)) was a blacksmith after he got married. In the beginning, they were living in the country and he was a fisherman, catching fish and selling it. Then in the wintertime, he used to go out and buy geese. We used to sell the geese.

One time, he brought the geese and they all started flying and they flew away. We had a closed-in yard, but they all flew away. So I don't know how we got them back or not.

For years, he had one helper, Sy, a fellow whom he practically raised. He was older than me, and he cut his finger on a sword to get out of the draft. The Russian draft was not good for Jews. They would go and never return.

Sy was a real strong guy. We used to go swimming in the river. (The men would go in the morning and the women would also go). He was a good swimmer, and he would swim down and catch the women by the leg, ha, ha. He used to scare mother.

I just remember my grandpa (not my grandma). He was living with us. His name would be (Abraham) Avram Asman (born around 1840?), because my father's (Hebrew) name is "Ksriel ben Avram" (1876 - 1941). I guess my grandma must have died.

My mother's mother I knew. Her father was a cohan on the other side of the river. Her name was Rose Turchen (born about 1840?). I knew my aunt, her name was Adriana (Turchen), and she was married to a man named Mayer. I also remember my father's sister, she was living not far from us, her name was Hanye Bashas (Asman) Katz (born about 1870) or something like that. Her husband (Gdalia Katz) was a kolesnik ("kaleh shnick"), they called it. He was making wheels for wagons. My father used the wagon wheels from him. And he was making tires, steel tires. They didn't have no rubber tires. (According to Uncle Ben, Gdalia Katz had two sons, Motka and Meyer. Motka was a member of some semi-secret organization. One day, Motka walked away from the village and never returned. It was a great mystery and nobody ever found out what happened to him).

And then as far as myself, I went to schul (synagogue) when I was five years old. I went to cheder (Hebrew school), to three different teachers. They had what you call an aleph-bet teacher. Then a chumash-midrash teacher. And then they had a Gemara teacher. You know what is a Gemara teacher? That's higher learning, just like going to college. That's where I learned the Hebrew, and the reading the Torah, and all. (Gemara is commentary on the Mishna (part of the Talmud) written mostly in Aramaic by later rabbis.)

My father (Karl Asman (1876 - 1941)) he came to this country in 1910. (According to copies of his Declaration of Intention for Citizenship, he arrived 28 February 1910 in New York on the Russia Asiatchk Wastachke Reia (Marine Company - Russian Asian East Route).

His Hebrew name was "Kzriel". He got a job in a factory. They were getting maybe seven, eight dollars a week. That's all they used to make. Out of that, he used to send us three dollars. In American, three dollars was six dollars in Europe. On that, we had to support ourselves. But we had our building and loan between the Jews. My mother borrowed twenty dollars, paying a high interest, and that's the way we got along.

When we came to this country in 1913, we went from our town, by horse and buggy to a city by the name of Polotsk. And from Polotsk, we took a train to Riga (Latvia). This was the first time that I had ever ridden a train. We stayed in Riga a short time and took a train to Lewbawitz (Libau, Latvia?). In Lewbawitz, (they called it "Labave"), I got lost. I got lost with a girlfriend of mine. We went out and we got lost, but finally we found our way back. In Lewbawitz, we stayed until we got a small boat to Liverpool. The boat was so small that the men slept on the floor. In Liverpool we missed the boat, so we stayed there for two weeks until we departed for America by ocean liner.

A friend that I got there (a tea merchant) was giving us tea. He was giving free tea to all the immigrants, so my mother sent me down to get some tea. So I got that and I got lost. I was walking around with the tea and walking around. And I couldn't talk English, and he couldn't talk Jewish (Yiddish). So finally a policeman realized that I got lost, so he took me to a Jewish store, and I told her that I was from the immigrant station. So he took me back. My mother was worried so much, I was gone for about two or three hours.

There was a firepost, and I made a mark so I wouldn't get lost when I went out. But instead of going this way, I want that way. I was just a block around all the time, but I still didn't know where I was. That's what happened.

After two weeks, we took an ocean liner, and it took two weeks until we landed in Philadelphia. Our boat caught on fire and we went up to the cement floor area. So we thought we were all going to go down. Finally, another boat came a long and put out the fire and we didn't have to go down.

In Philadelphia, it was me and Rose (Asman Schain) and my mother (Masha Turchen Asman). My older sister, Ethel (Asman Segall) came first by herself. She was about sixteen years old.

My mother was real religious, she didn't want to go to America - they were not religious enough. So my sister Ethel said, "Mama, I'll go first, and I'll see. If I tell you it's o.k., you come too". So she was there, and a year later, we all came together and ended in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

By that time I was about fourteen years old. I went to the first grade at fourteen and in the fourth year (when I was eighteen) I was already in high school.

I was reading the Torah in Europe yet already. So I've been reading it, I'm still reading it, thank G-d. That's one thing I know of real well. I think I'm considered the best reader in Milwaukee, in this part of the state. I read in Rochester, Minnesota, I read in Palm Springs, California; I read in New York, and in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. In Madison, Wisconsin I read a couple times. So wherever I went I was reading.

I was in Rochester. My wife (Grace) had open heart surgery there. They had schul (services) in the rabbi's house. When I came there, I was reading the Torah. So his (the rabbi's) wife said, "A 'malech from himmel', sent you down here". Understand Jewish? "An angel from heaven", you know. She was so happy that I could read the Torah over there. I used to go there every Saturday. They used to have a minyan (group of ten or more praying).

When I got to the states, we landed in Sheboygan (Wisconsin), and lived in Sheboygan. I was living in Sheboygan. I lived in Sheboygan about three years. And then my father bought a horse and he peddled. So he peddled in the territory toward Green Bay (Wisconsin). And he liked it over there and we moved to Green Bay. I lived there till I got married.

I went to high school in Green Bay with Curly Lambeau (of Green Bay Packer football fame). He wasn't so extra big, but he was a nice, nice man. Curly and I were very good friends. In fact on his team, there was a Jewish boy. There was one fellow by the name of Charley Sauber, so he was playing football too on Saturday. His mother didn't want him to play on Saturday. So after schul, he used to take his clothes and throw it all outside and I used to pick them up. Curley liked that. Then they'd go out and practice. There was Nate Abrams, he was the catcher. All the Abrams boys belonged to it.

They used to say he (Curly) broke every bone in his body playing football. He worked in a store, a sporting store called Stiefel's Sporting Store in Green Bay. In fact I bought my tuxedo when I got married in his store. I knew all the boys, those days. On Saturday, we used to watch them play.

I remember I played football with some of the kids. I caught the ball and I thought I made a touchdown. But instead of running this way, I ran that way. Nobody was chasing me.

I didn't graduate - I quit high school and then I went to vocational schools. I didn't pass the grades. Then my teacher wanted to put me back and I didn't want to go so I got mad and quit.

We had a store. We opened up a general store. It was in 1929. It started in 1924, but in 1929 things went bad, you know, so we sold out. I moved to another store, and it didn't work so we closed up.

We heard there was a store in Milwaukee that was being sold out so we came to Milwaukee and I bought a dress shop. The dress shop was on Center Street. Center Street wasn't much of a business street. So it's only there about a year and a half when I sold out to somebody else. The poor guy, they didn't make it go. They paid us $1,700. I stayed with them for about a week, showed them around, got 'em acquainted, but the young couple, it didn't work out with them either. There wasn't much business.

In 1940, I was already on the road for a while, peddling, and then I bought out a junk shop from a fellow that used to live in our town in Russia. In Russia they used to live right next store. Their name was Perlson. I bought his shop out and I had it for a year and a half, and then somebody else come and bought the whole building out, another junk dealer.

So I was left and didn't have anything to do. So I got a job at A. O. Smith. I worked there for three and a half years. Of course, they put me in the shipping and receiving. That was on 27th street. Then they moved me on 35th street. There I did different things. Then I heard that they were sending some people to learn the machine shop. So I registered for the machine shop. I used to go there every night for about six weeks. After six weeks they gave us a diploma already.

Then I got out of there and they put me in the engineering department. So there they put me on a big lathe. A $30,000 lathe. And I was making things that they put the bombs in. We used to take a regular casting and I used to put it in and reel it out and it come out real good - to one ten thousandth of an inch, I used to get it. That's what I was doing for a long time. I worked there until the end of the war.

And that's my story. That's the story of my life.

Note: My great-uncle, Ben Asman, was 89 when he told me these stories in December 1989.

I have several very fond memories of him:

When I was about seven years old, my father (Dr. Robert Jacobs) took us to Uncle Ben's junk store to get a trash barrel. It was a great place for a kid to run around, and when we left, he gave huge whistles to me and my sisters, Judy and Melody.

Uncle Ben also accompanied us on a trip to Israel in 1986, when he was 87. He had the health of a man 15 or 20 years younger than himself, probably from walking to services every Saturday morning, and he was able to get around quite well by himself.

In Israel, he was quite able to carry on conversations in Yiddish and the only regret I ever heard him express was that he had so much to say at a family banquet, but he didn't say it in Hebrew.

The last time that I saw Uncle Ben was in 1992, about two weeks before his death. He was in the hospital for surgery for an intestinal blockage and was in good spirits. He could still walk quite briskly down the hallway, even while hooked up to a mobile IV stand.

He was concerned about the upcoming operation, but strangely calm and very brave. It was as though G-d was his friend and it didn't really matter whether the operation was a success or not - either way, it would be o.k. Unfortunately, he did not survive the operation and he died a righteous man at the age of 93.
