Stavisht, the Website

When the idea for a Stavisht website took hold, I really didn't think there would be much to include other than the database of Stavisht residents which had been created by Karen Sanders. But, a simple email to a JewishGen special interest group resulted in a collection of photos, maps, news, and family stories which quickly brought this online village to life. Soon after the site went live in 2012, other researchers from all over the world sent in information which continues to this day. As such, this 2019 update is years in the making. May it serve you well.

Vivian M. Linderman is the creator, web designer, and webmaster of the Stavisht website. Vivian previously worked on the Stavisht Yizkor Book project where she served as the coordinator encouraging and facilitating the online publication of the Yizkor Book. Her paternal grandparents were Stavishters who settled in Brooklyn, New York and, later, California.

Karen Isabel Sanders is the researcher and creator of the extensive Resident Database that is found on the website. Karen had spent years documenting her findings of those who lived in Stavisht along with her grandparents. She worked tirelessly to collect photos, family stories, and other items, of which many are included on this site. Karen also worked on the Yizkor Book project typing the translation into MS Word. Her paternal grandparents were born in Stavisht and made the Bronx, New York their home in America.

Many gracious thank yous to Nathen Gabriel, Rabbi Yehuda Hausman, Ida Selavan Schwarcz and the JewishGen Viewmate volunteers who assisted with translations, and to all the contributors of the wonderful items that appear on the website.

Thank yous would not be complete without recognizing Viktor Khimenko, a resident of St. Petersburg, Russia who has taken a great interest in keeping the history of Stavisht alive for future generations. Recently he worked with Sergey Plakhotnyuk to translate the Stavisht Yizkor book into Ukrainian and had 70 copies delivered to schools and community organizations throughout the village. He monitors and maintains several websites focused on Stavisht and its surroundings. Viktor is a regular contributor to this site.
