FIRST PAGE OF THE 1892 SNITKOV TAX POLL
MOGILEVSKOIAUYEZD

Image, Description, and Rough Transcription

The following information is from the first page of the 1892 Snitkov Jewish tax poll.  With 11 entries, it represents approximately 6% of the town's households. Unfortunately, not all the names are easy to read. Below is the original, with the explanation and transcription further down.

Description:
Column 1: Line entry number. Column 2: Location (Snitkov). Column 3: House type (all=wooden). Column 4: Taxpayer's given and family names. Column 5: Property value. Columns 6-8: Taxes and total.

It is unclear what time period is covered by this document; the tax amounts seem remarkably small even for the times and community. Real property values recorded ranged from 80 rubles to more than 200. The 'Real Property' column (5) contains two numbers separated by a slash; this perhaps indicated the value change from the prior poll. The wooden house was standard at that time throughout the Russian Empire. There is a column for a tax to cover the government's expense of collecting taxes.

Values are denominated in rubles and kopeks (one r = 100 k).  For an idea of real worth when looking at the figures below, a chicken might cost 50 kopeks, a cow, 25 rubles.  An urban industrial worker could earn as much as 44 rubles per month, but a textile worker only 15 or so. (MG)

One of the 11 entries is crossed out, and another may be, or it might be damage to the ancient page, but they still owe tax; this is because under the laws of that era, even if they were not still resident in Snitkov, they were offically 'assigned' to it.

For the following display the surnames have been alphabetized in the first column, showing the individual's list number (from the original page) in the next column. The headings are simplified translations of the original; there may be some minor translation questions.
