Shklov has its own train station, a stop located on the line connecting Mogliev to the south with Orsha to the north. |
PARK OF
CULTURE AND REST SEMEN ZORICH STATUE |
Near the center of town
is a large green park, the "Park of Culture and Rest," an
urban landscape project built at the end of the 19th
century/beginning of 20th century. The park
features wide avenues lined with oak, chestnut, poplars,
maple and elm trees, The park has a playground and
amusement park rides for the town's children to enjoy.
A statue of Semen Zorich, was erected in the town's
park in 2007. It depicts the General's figure
in paramilitary uniform with rolls of drafts in one
hand. |

ORTHODOX CHURCH |
The blue-domed Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church stands in a central part of town. Construction of this Church began in the late 18th century, by Semyon Zorich, who managed to lay the foundation, but it was not completed until much later, in 1905. This church building survived the years of Soviet atheism and the ravages of WWII. In 1993 the church was repainted, the main dome was restored, and a new roof cross added. | |
WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL |
Nearby is a square with
the town's memorial to the soldiers who died in World War
II. See this link for pictures of the World War II
Memorial. Note that this memorial does not
make mention of the thousands of innocent Jewish civilians
who were slaughtered in Shklov and its Zarecha and
Rizhkevich areas, and this memorial stands only in honor
of the soldiers who died in the fighting.

MONUMENT TO
"PEACEFUL CITIZENS OF SHKLOV" KILLED IN WWII |
At the top of a hill on
the outskirts of Shklov near the road leading into
Zarecha, stands an obelisk monument to the "peaceful
citizens of Shklov" who were killed in World War
II. A staircase of several flights of
stairs leads up to the monument. No
mention is made of the Jewish population that was brutally
shot, only "peaceful citizens." |

SHKLOV MUSEUM | The town houses the district's Museum of Local Lore and History of Shklov District. This museum has various rooms which show collections of historical and cultural artifacts. | |
CUCUMBER STATUE | Shklov is famous for its cucumbers. In the square in front of the "House of Culture"stands a monument dedicated to the cucumber, which was put up in 2007. Click here for link to a Shklov recipe for half-sour pickled cucumbers. | |

Shklov is a relatively
small provincial capital. It's main store is
the Soviet era "Univermag"
Department Store. It has several more modern
supermarket-style grocery stores, banks, and a few
cafe-restaurants. |
