Rieback/Alitsky Family

Toybe Fisher Ribak, Ben Zion Ribak (later Rieback in South Africa)(1897-1959), and Velvel Ribak (1856-1916), taken in 1902 or a bit later, in either Panevezys or Moletai, Lithuania.  Ben Zion married Leah Dina Alitsky of Kupiskis (1897-1964).  They moved to Johannesburg and he then founded the Kupishker Society and also the Moletai Society.  He is noted for writing about his birthplace of Moletai in the Rokiskis Yizkor Book and other sources.

 
The Ribak (later Rieback) family is shown here in Molotai, Lithuania, in 1928, prior to the departure of Ben-Zion Ribak for South Africa.  In the photo are, left to right, Fanny Ribak Fluxman, Mendel Ribak, Ben-Zion Ribak, Israel Ribak, Leah-Dina Alitsky Ribak, and Esther Ribak Hadassin.  Note their serious stiff demeanor.  Ben-Zion's wife and children followed him to South Africa in 1929 and were accompanied on the ship by the Altman (later Elterman) family who were also from Kupiskis.



 

 This photo was taken in Capetown in 1931, on the occasion of the visit of Oscar Ribak, older brother of Ben-Zion Ribak, to South Africa (Oscar is the grandfather of Joe Winston).  Oscar had not seen his younger brother since he left Lithuania for America in 1906.  Shown standing on the top row, left to right, are Ben-Zion Ribak, Leah-Dina Alitsky Ribak, and Oscar Ribak.  The bottom row are left to right: Mendel Ribak, Esther Ribak Hadassin, Israel Ribak and Fanny Ribak Fluxman.  Everyone looks quite related in the photo as compared to the one in 1928.

The festive family get-together in Johannesburg, SA, shows three generations of the Ribak family from Ben-Zion and Leah-Dina, to their children Mendel, Esther, Israel and Fanny, and includes their grandchildren.
Alice Meyerson Rieback and husband Israel Rieback.  Israel Rieback was the son of Ben Zion Rieback and Leah-Dina Alitsky.

 


 

 Mendel Rieback and wife Nachama Alter Rieback, parents of Adele Glick.  Mendel was the son of Ben Zion Rieback and Leah-Dina Alitsky.
