Niman-Kling Family

Dov Ber Niman Chatzkel Niman

Dov Ber Niman and (1832-1914) and his son, Chatzkel Niman, were from Aniksht, just outside Kupiskis but moved to Kupiskis shortly before emigrating to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1899. He was poor, became a peddler in Worcester, and had five children,  all of whom migrated to Worcester in the 1880s and 1890's.

Dov Ber outlived three of his children. His eldest son, Chatzkel, (1857-1909) married Frieda Kling (1861-1921), from Vabalninkas, and they had all of their five children in Kupiskis, before emigrating. In Worcester, he became a peddler like his father.

Frieda Kling Niman Max Niman

Max G. Niman, born in Kupiskis, was the eldest son of Frieda Kling Niman and Chatzkel Niman . He arrived in America at 16 years of age and within twelve years became quite wealthy, as a scrap metal peddler in Brooklyn. He was able to do this because the value of metal skyrocketed during World War I.  He eventually bought an iron foundry and built sewer pipes for the growing city of New York.

These photos and the information were provided by Michael Pertain, the great-great grandson of Dov Ber Niman, the great-grandson of Frieda Kling and Chatzkel Niman, and the grandson of  Max Niman.
