The couple had five children: Moise, 1903, Ita-Reiza, 1905,
Khatskel-Meier, 1907, Ilja, 1910, and Khone-Leiba, 1913.
Unfortunately, sometime following World War I, the parents died leaving
five young orphans. As there was no one to take all five of the
children, they were taken to an orphanage in Vilnius.
Arrangements were eventually made to send the children to America to
their mother's parents who lived in Boston, MA. They left behind
their paternal aunt, Sheyna-Nekha Gindelman and her husband Elias-Iavno
Dworetz.
So the children left and went to Bremen where they sailed on the SS
America, on June 7, 1922, and arrived on June 17, 1922, in New York.
They then traveled to their grandfather Chaim Leavett, who lived at 24
Auburn, Boston, MA. Once in America, they changed their name to
Handelman.

Note: Kalman was the nephew of Rokhel-Rivka (Hindelman) Niman, the
great great grandmother of Michael Pertain. The photos were
provided by Ilja Gindelman's daughter, Lisa Gail Handelman, and Michael
Pertain, with the assistance of Olga Kirsanova, Brooklyn college Faculty
Technology Center. |
