From 1882, the first Colonists started arriving in New York
City. They most likely were residents of Ward's Island at Castle
Garden as they were sponsored by the Hebrew Emmigrant Aid
Society. Many Americans did not know Yiddish or Russian, so the
names of the Colonists underwent many changes until 1910 when most had
assimilated into local populations.
