281 males [actually
252] Translator’s Notes: 86 were newly born males, though none are listed between the ages of 8 and 13 (evidently the 1850 census did not include children under the age of four). Fifty-three on the 1850 list are not present by 1858, including 38 deaths (12% of total), 8 departures, 3 conversion (who left as well), and 1 disappearance. 22 switched the families with which they were associated. There were 40 fosters sons, between the ages of 9 and 56 (in 1850), and were quite often much older than the “foster parents.” Several times, a family had three foster sons as well as relatives of the foster sons. |
259 females [actually
235] Translator’s Notes: Women were clearly not included in the 1850 revision census list, hence the lack of any women’s deaths being mentioned. Sixty-nine females ages ¼ year to 7 are listed, though none ages 8 to 9. Nine are recorded as having left, and 13 changed families. |
