David Gruper and two of his siblings made aliyah in 1882; they settled in Zikhron Ya'akov (founded in 1882; 35 kilometers south of Haifa). In 1903, David and his wife Charna arrived in Atlit with the first group of settlers. Three years later David built a permanent "gravel" house. David and Charna's son, Elimelech, was born in 1914, followed ten years later by daughters Klara and Carmela. Charna passed away in 1928. Elimelech married |
Lea Zukerman in 1940, requiring the addition of several more rooms to the "gravel" house. David served as Mukhtar (head of a village) of the village of Atlit. He negotiated all matters with both the Ottoman and British Governments. David was also in charge of the granary, taxing farmers for threshing. |

Zeev Rakov was born in Krasilow, Ukraine (near Proskow). In 1920 Rakov immigrated to Palestine, along with a group of Zionist youth. Once in Palestine, Zeev Rakov joined a working unit in SHUNI drying out the Kabara Swamps. When the Atlit Salt Company was founded in 1922, Rakov moved to Atlit. Yaffa Shpiegel, born in Krasilow in 1903, arrived in Palestine in about 1925. Yaffa knew Zeev Rakov in Krasilow; she married him in 1925 soon after arriving in Palestine. In 1928, their daughter Lea |
was born, followed by Ora six years later. Lea grew up in Atlit, joined Kibbutz Ein Harod, and served in the Palmach. Lea was killed in March, 1948. After Lea's death, the family moved to Haifa, while Zeev remained in Atlit working for the salt company. Ora married Amnon Ben Zion. Two of their children – Eyal, a submarine commander and Lili, a teacher – still live in Atlit.
