As soon as there were ten Jewish families in Washington, there was interest in erecting a synagogue and forming a congregation.

In 1902, under the guidance and direction of its first rabbi, Rabbi J. GOLDFARB (pictured, The Jewish Criterion - Vol. 51 No. 22 - 25 July 1919). the congregation erected a synagogue which was valued—in 1919—at $13,000 dollars.

The title of the congregation became Beth Israel (House of Israel).
