~ Ust'-Chorna Cemetery ~

Jewish families that lived in Ust'-Chorna, and possibly other nearby villages, used the Ust'-Chorna cemetery as the final resting place
for their loved ones.

The Jewish cemetery is located across from the town, over the river, then on the mountainside. The cemetery is not maintained.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document
Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries
of the Zakarpats'ka oblast.

~ Background Information ~

As mentioned above, the Ust'-Chorna cemetery is located on the mountainside, across a river. When we entered the hamlet, we asked a "Babushka" where the cemetery was. She pointed across the river. Since we didn't see a bridge or a foot bridge, we asked her how would we be able to cross the river. She then escorted us across the street to a house where a 90 year old man lived and he agreed to take us across the river. He mentioned to us that he travels this way across the river—two times a day—for firewood. When we arrived in his back yard, next to the river bank, we were very surprised to see how he crosses the river—on a high wire.

Following are two photographs and and a short video of our crossing the river by manually pulling on the cable.
