Syurte Religious

~ Religious Life ~

The community appointed its own Rabbi in the 1880s and later opened a Talmud Torah and elementary school.
By 1941, Syurte had a synagogue, a mikva, and a cemetery.

Many of the young were members of the Zionist youth movements, such as Hashomer Hatzair, Bnei Akiva, and Betar.

~ Syurte Cemetery ~

Jewish families that lived in Syurte, and possibly other nearby villages, used the Syurte cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones.

The Jewish cemetery is located off the highway, some distance behind two gas stations. Today, it has a cement wall and a gate that was not locked. As you can see from the images below, it was quite a task to find and restore this cemetery in 2002.

When visiting this cemetery in 2011, it was very overgrown again, resulting in the differences between some of the following tombstone photos you will see below.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries of the Zakarpats'ka oblast.
