The list was compiled by Mark Tritsch from the annual report of the Staats-Real- und Ober-Gymnasium (State Technical and Upper High School) for 1875. The full report can be seen in this archived, digitzed book. The school had a wide catchment area in southern Moravia and even attracted students from Vienna and Hungary, testifying to its good reputation. The students listed below are only those from Nikolsburg itself, which was about one-third of the intake. Of the Nikolsburg students about half seem to have come from the Jewish community. The school had a very modern syllabus and offered both Roman Catholic and Jewish religious instruction (Jewish religion was taught by Moriz Eisler). Classes I through IV were technical and high-school; classes V through VIII were upper high-school preparatory to university. We can be sure that many of the Nikolsburger Jews who later became doctors or lawyers in Vienna studied here.
