                        Recovered Jewish Gravestones
                        Brought to the Narewka Jewish
                              Cemetery

                          Kasia Bielawska from Narewka
has informed me of the recent recovery of
three Jewish gravestones and has sent
photographs. Two of the matzevot ,
which had been used as steps, were found in
a nearby village during the renovation of an
old wooden house. They were brought to the
Narewka Jewish Cemetery by Kasia and Bogdan
Dawidziuk, with the help of Jurek
Pańkowsk.  One of the gravestones was
for a young boy Eliyahu and has the symbol
of a broken tree contained within a
                            heart-shaped form. A third gravestone (for a
young girl) was also found in another nearby
village; this one had been used in the
foundation of an outbuilding. See the
photographs below (May 2011); see also, Macewy

                          The gravestones were discovered
and returned to the Jewish Cemetery in
Narewka only days after the May
2011 visit to Narewka of Zvika
                              Birenbaum, Principal of
                              Adar School, Petch-Tikwa,
                              Israel, with
his students, his brother and daughter.  After
                              learning of the recovered gravestones,
Zvika and his students were inspired to
write a song in memory of
                            Eliyahu,
whose gravestone was one of those that had
been brought to the cemetery. Click
