Cemeteries

Research into family history is not complete without a burial plot or a gravestone (matzeva). Lyakhovichi / Lechovicher descendants are lucky to have had a dedicated team, which documented and photographed over 1,200 stones in all of the New York emigre association plots. The collection of this hard work is listed in the Complete Lyakhovichi Records Catalog.

The team made discoveries that allowed them to determine key facts about the deceased even when their stone is damaged, eroded, or missing. You can learn what the symbols and shapes of the monuments mean as well as details can be gleaned from the Hebrew names and inscriptions on the markers.

Of course there is information and photographs from the old and new cemetery in Lyakhovichi too.

It is our hope that this research will help someone searching these pages for their ancestors as well as answers to questions about burial plots and layouts of the cemeteries.

Thank you to Tina Levine for photographing the cemeteries.
