I. The accused
Leopold Windisch

Was born 15 April 1913 in Senftenberg near Krems on the Danube, Austria, as illegitimate son of the housewife Juliane Windisch.  The years of his childhood he spent with his mother in the house of his grandparents.  When his mother married in 1920, the accused remained with his grandparents, who had in the meantime moved to Krems.  Vol 2 p 99, vol 4 p 707 ff, vol 7 p 1008, doc vol VII p 537 ff, 552, 559, 560, 562, 589a, vol 17 p 2429

Here he also attended the Volksschule [elementary school], then three grades of the Untergymnasium (middle school) and then 2 years (1927- 1929) of the senior vocational school. Vol 4 p 722, 727 ff, BA. LG Linz Vg Vr 1555/53 p 9, Vol 17 p 2429

After that, the accused was an intern for 1-1/2 years (1929 – 1931) at the District Chamber of Farmers in Krems and then for 1 year counter clerk and bookkeeper at the Dairy Cooperative in Krems.  Vol 4 p 715, 722, 724 ff, doc vol VII, p 537, 539, 552, 560, 562, 589a

In the year 1932 he became unemployed on account of his illegal national socialist activities.  In June 1934 he fled to Germany on political grounds and became a German citizen on 2 September 1935.  Vol 4 p 715 f, doc vol VII, p 538 ff, 552, 559 f, doc vol VII, p 585

In February 1935 the accused took a one-year preparatory course for higher education at the University of Koenigsberg/Prussia.  A special certificate from the Prussian Ministry for Science, Education, and People’s Culture (WE u. V) acknowledged his graduation with ability to go to college.  In the winter semester 1936 he studied at the University of Koenigsberg/Prussia – apparently only one semester – Law and Political Science.  In the same year he left the Roman Catholic Church.  Vol 4 p 713, vol 17 p 2436

On 23 December 1939, the accused married Ruth nee Eisermann in Tilsit.  They had a daughter Heidrun on 10 July 1944.  Another child died in 1959 aged 3-1/2.  The wife filed for divorce on 13 May 1964 at the LG Mainz, and the marriage was dissolved on 24 June 1964, due to the debts of the accused.  This case has no bearing on the divorce.  BA 1 R 189/64 LG Mainz p 2, 35 f.
