Meyerowitz/Goldin Family

The Meyerowitz family was originally from Birziai, Lithuania, and came to Kupiskis in approximately 1886 when several of the children of Eliash Meyerowitz married women from there.   The children of Eliash were:  Gershon-Zvi, Naftoli, Efraim, Itsyk "Isaac", Yisroel, Benjamin, Perel and two other females whose names are not known.  The branch that follows is that of Naftoli Meyerowitz, born 1869, the son of Eliash and Malka Peres.

The photo above was taken on July 27, 1937, in Kupiskis, and the inscription on the back from Braine Meyerowitz Krengel states: "I am sending you (Sam) a memory of our expanded family". The photo was taken in front of a typical wood frame home in Kupiskis which was probably located at 18 Turgaviete Gatve, the home of Naftoli Meyerowitz. In the photo are left to right, in the back, the Meyerowitz children and their spouses: Braine Meyerowitz Krengel, Shmuel Krengel, Sheina Meyerowitz Mieskaukas (wife of Abram Mieskaukas, mother of Gitel Mieskaukaite), Base-Dveire bat Mendel-Leib Rabinowitz Meyerowitz, and her husband Beno-Leizer ben Naftoli Meyerowitz. The photo was taken prior to Sheina Goldin's departure in 1929 for Cape Town, SA. Once in England, she traveled by train to London, then Southampton and thence onto Cape Town via a vessel of the Union Castle Line. In Cape Town, Sheina was met by Shmuel-Judel "Sam" Meyerowitz (later Meyer) and they married in Port Alfred, SA.

The wedding photo of Shmuel-Judel ben Naftoli Meyerowitz and Sheina bat Yekutiel Goldin was taken in 1929 in Port Alfred, SA. The wedding was arranged by Shmuel's uncle Ben Meyerowitz (Meyer) and his wife Jennie, and their children Freida and Stanley (twins), Archie, and Broche.
