Pre-School Class, c. 1933
Elke Apelbaum Savoy, who submitted this picture, says "This is a picture from the private Hebrew School that Jewish children attended before they went to the regular public Yiddish school. The children learned Hebrew here. Children started public school at the age of 7. The children in this picture are under 7. My uncle Simcha MASLER is in the top row all the way over on the left. Standing next to him is Zwi ZAUDERER, the survivor who sent this picture to my mother. Zwi lives in Israel. Based on my uncle's age, my mother and I estimate that this picture was taken in 1933."
Koka Greif, in Israel, has identified the teachers. On the right is Hannah ZIMAND, who survived the war and died later in Israel. Ms. Greif remembers her as "a good teacher." On the left is "Mr. ADAM" (pronounced AY[as in "say"]-DEM), who died in the war. He was the Director of the "Hebrew school for Zionists" as well as a teacher.
Michael Hirt, in Elmhurst, Illinois, says that “I can identify the fifth child from the left in the second row in the photograph. This person is my Uncle, Joseph Bernard Hirt. He is 78 years old and currently resides in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. (2008)
Can anyone else help us to identify the other people in the picture?
