Fastov is a city in Central Ukraine located on Unava River about 64 km south-west of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Serving as a major railway station on the route from Central Europe to Russia, the city has always had a convenient position from economical and strategic perspective. Fastov once belonged to Russian Empire (and later the USSR) but it came under jurisdiction of Ukraine in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The city is currently an administrative center of Kiev region (oblast’) with population of 55,500 people (as of 2004). Presently, there are approximately 30 Jewish residents in Fastov which one time was a predominately Jewish city.
