Debrecen Religious

~ Religious Life ~

In the early 20th century, the community was divided into Orthodox and Status Quo congregations. The first synagogue was constructed in 1852 and the magnificent Great Synagogue, designed by Jacob GARTNER, was completed in 1897 (destroyed by fire in 1948). Three other synagogues were constructed in the early 1920s.

The first Jewish school was opened in 1886 and, by 1900, enrollment reached 615 students. A girls' school, founded in 1906, was attended by 200-250 students. A Jewish high school was established in the 1920s when public schools were closed to Jews, and 500 students had graduated through 1944. Many high school teachers promoted Zionism, whose influence spread between the World Wars.

Sholom SCHIFFMAN served as shochet in Debrecen.

By 1941, Debrecen had several synagogues, mikvahs, a Jewish community center and religious schools.
